Hugging is a trend for a 4 year old? I don't think they are acquainted with hand shaking yet. That said, some children love to hug while others do not.

My daughter is a hugger. It baffles me. I've never been much of a hugger, and I tend to be taken aback when she glomps a kid she has just met. But it seems to be okay with the other kids and their parents, so I let it go.
