Have you ever found a friend or relative's child to be so socially "off" that they might be autistic?

Washington Post columnist Carolyn Hax took on a reader's question about whether it's appropriate to advise a friend that her 8-year-old son might be on the autism spectrum. The reader, who has some professional expertise in evaluating children, reports that the child "seems to miss some social cues other 8-year-old boys pick up on." Hax responds that she should keep her thoughts to herself; it's not worth jeopardizing the friendship, especially since she could be wrong.
