Heidi Klum Talks About Her Minivan

The Minivan Dilemma

Minivans may be one of the most unattractive vehicles on the road but when it comes to practicality, they are hard to beat. Buckets seats, third rows, deep trunks and sliding doors make the aerodynamic wheels hard to resist for parties of four or more. Before having kids, I swore up and down that I would never command such a vessel but now that I'm part of the motherload, I'm reconsidering my options. Even mama Heidi Klum admits to the wonder of the minivan. On her recent Ellen appearance, hostess Ellen asked the expectant lady if she could avoid the dreaded minivan to which Heidi replied, "No way. We all don’t fit otherwise... It’s impossible."

What are your thoughts on the minivan? Yea or Nay?

I would own a minivan if I needed the space. As it turns out, most things in life are less about how something looks and more about how practical that something is. A minivan may not look amazing (though some look just fine), but it does what you want it to do.I am young, and have no plans on having kids. However, if I had a baby, the space would absolutely be needed. I wouldn't get a minivan, but you can bet I will probably buy a nice crossover vehicle, that has more space than the average car, but not as much as a minivan (since I don't plan on ever needing something that big!)

I think a minivan is a practical, convenient car. It's good for road trips, too. With that said, my husband and I will never own one, as we're child-free by choice. But having hitched rides in one, I think they're good vehicles.

anon - if they bring A friend along, they will have plenty of room in my sedan. :) i have nothing against minivans, only the women who buy them and just complain about them constantly.

never thought i'd own one-- nevermind LOVE it! a minivan is the only way to travel comfortably if there are more than 4 people traveling, or even if you have a dog riding along with you! many SUVs won't accommodate more than 2 carseats, which kids do stay in for several years. it's also great for times when you want grandparents to come along to do something fun-- (apple picking??), but don't want to take separate cars. a van definitely comes in handy more often than not. with infants-- you can sit in the third row to feed them; with toddlers, you can stick a potty right in the van for emergencies; take all the seats out and it holds more than most pick up trucks. i recently traded in my van for a cute fuel-efficient car, but am missing my van every day!!

These things are so bad for the environment, it's not even funny. Unless you have three or more kids, it is absolutely not acceptable to drive one. And don't pretend a little baby and a diaper bag need 9 seats worth of space.

i used to make fun of people who drove minivans and swore i'd never own one. HOWEVER, i bit the bullet a few months back and it's now my favorite car ever! when i'm driving, i pretend i'm in something cute and sporty. there's nothing else out there that can compare to the spacious interior and the comfort of the ride. i have the toyota siena and love it! sad to say ... but i'm now a minivan fan!

A note to the moms that are only having one or 2 kids and thinking that an SUV will be enough....on most days it is but if you want to bring any of you kids friends with or if you are traveling to a birthday party and you don't have a minivan be prepared to drive 2 vehicles and then try to figure out how you will divide your child and their friends up between 2 vehicles. I am just saying...it is convenient.

ms - two kids plus two adults with carseats fit fine in a sedan. if you have more than two kids who need carseats then an SUV is an option. kids aren't in carseats forever.if people want minivans they should get them! i just don't think you HAVE to have one as there are ways of getting by without them. and it makes me nuts to hear women complain about having them or how lame they feel to have them... if you feel that way then you shouldn't have gotten one.

I will probably end up with a minivanb. I dreaded the thought not becuase I though they were ugly, i actually like the dodge versions, but becuase they are sooooo long. I'm used to short compact cars and i have a hard enough time with those, backing out has just never been one of my ace skills. But I really want more room. I love my little car, it just stinks having to cram everything in and when we have our next there is going to be very very little room left for our two dogs, much less if we all want to go somewhere. If I wanted to get a wagon for the kids, there just wouldn't be any room for it, and knowing how many trips i have planned for the future, i need more room.

@hausfrau: our mothers didn't have to abide by car seat / booster seat laws either which makes it impossible now to put that many kids plus 2 adults in a sedan ....

I loved my minivan as well. I also think there are far uglier cars on the road than minivans, but that's just me. The only reason we don't have our minivan anymore is because of our lifestyle and where we live now. We needed a vehicle large enough for the 6 of us which also had high clearance and 4wheel drive, the latter two being amenities our minivan couldn't provide.

Most of our mothers got along fine without a minivan, so I see no reason to change.

We got a minivan when I was pregnant with baby #3. I Love my minivan! I'm a minivan convert--everyone should have one.

We only plan on two kids, so we don't need tons of room. We're looking to buy a Mazda 5. I still can't bring myself to own a minivan!

We're expecting our first little one in May and I refuse to get a minivan. We're planning for only 2 kids and I think my CR-V can handle all 4 of us. :)
