Heroic Mom Rescued 30 Babies Left to Die in the Trash

The story of a woman in China who found and raised over thirty abandoned babies, and who is now dying herself, has revived the controversy over the country's one child per family policy.

Lou Xiaoying, a poor woman who has made a living by collecting trash, was 48 when she found a baby girl lying on a pile of garbage in the streets of Jinhua. She rescued the girl, explaining later, "'I realized if we had strength enough to collect garbage how could we not recycle something as important as human lives?"

Lou went on to rescue over thirty more children, raising four as her own and finding homes for the others. Her youngest, who she found when she was 82 and who is now 7, is named Zhang Qilin, which means "rare and precious," in Chinese.
