Get your motor running! With one of own LilSugar editors quickly approaching the due date for her first baby, we decided to throw a fete in her honor. We have a lil tradition around here of creating festive diaper cakes for our editors, but it was time to shake things up a bit. When I was researching our roundup of diaper-cake ideas , I was smitten with the motorcycle versions and thought I'd put my crafting skills to the test. The result: a panda-driven chopper that was ready to zoom right into the baby boy's nursery. Best of all, the whole thing took just under an hour to create! Keep reading to see how to do it yourself!
You will need:
- 40 Size 1 diapers (20 for each tire)
- 1 8-inch cake pan
- 2 rubber bands
- 2 receiving blankets
- 2 bibs
- 1 chain link toy or piece of ribbon
- 1 pair socks or mittens
- 1 baby bottle
- 1 stuffed animal
- decorative ribbon
Step 1: Create a Tire
Begin filling the cake pan with 20 diapers in a fan-like way. Make sure the gap between each diaper is even. Feel free to pull each diaper until they are even. Once even, there should be a small hole in the center.
Step 2: Bind Them
Place a rubber band around "tire #1" and remove it from the pan.
Step 3: Repeat Steps 1 and 2 For Tire #2
Step 4: Decorate With Ribbon
Wrap each tire with ribbon, being sure to cover the rubber band as you do so. Secure the ribbon in place with a pin (which will eventually be the bottom of the tire).
Step 5: Repeat Step #4 For Tire #2
Step 6: Create the Frame of the Motorcycle
Fold receiving blanket #1 in half and roll it into a long roll.
Step 7: Place Roll Through Tire #2
Carefully slip the rolled-up blanket through the opening in the second tire. If necessary, secure the end of the blanket with a pin so it doesn't unravel.
Step 8: Keep Threading It Through
Continue to gently pull the rolled blanket through the rear tire, and then thread it all the way through the front tire, as well.
Step 9: Complete the Oval
Pull the rolled blanket through, and have the two ends meet inside the rear tire (as shown here).
Step 10: Roll Blanket #2
Using the same technique as before, fold blanket #2 in half and roll it up.
Step 11: Thread Blanket Through Front Tire
Carefully pull the rolled-up blanket through the front tire.
Step 12: Pull It Through Until the Ends Are Even
Step 13: Place Bib Over Front Wheel
This will become your tire cover. Then place bib #2 over the rear wheel (optional).
Step 14: Secure Blanket #2 Above Front Tire
Using a baby link toy link or a piece of ribbon, tightly secure the sides of blanket #2 together.
Step 15: Place Baby Bottle on Cycle
Place the baby bottle on top of the bib (through the receiving blanket) to create a "headlight" for the 'cycle. If necessary, wrap the bottle in a washcloth to make it fit more snugly.
Step 16: Pull Handlebars Through Tightly
Shimmy the link or ribbon down the receiving blanket until they create a handlebar look. At this point, you can add socks or mittens to the end of the handlebars to create a more realistic feel to the ride. Then add the stuffed animal to the creation!
