How Moms Can Quit Smoking

The Program That Gets Pregnant Women to Quit Smoking For Good

Every pregnancy book says smoking when you're expecting is a giant no-no. So for the sake of their health and their baby's life, many moms toss out their cigarettes during those nine months. Unfortunately, the stresses of motherhood and the previous addiction prevent these women from staying smoke-free after the baby arrives. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 44 percent of women who previously smoked start smoking again within six months of giving birth. But Stay Quit Moms may be able to reduce that number.

Funded by the National Cancer Institute, Stay Quit Moms is a free online program that works with expectant and newly postpartum moms to help them quit smoking for good. The program emphasizes the benefits of staying smoke-free after giving birth and offers tools and support to those trying to quit. Women who have participated in Stay Quit Moms say it has not only helped them quit smoking but also "helped them become a better mom."

Unlike many other programs, Stay Quit Moms only has two requirements. First, participants must be at least 18 years old, and second, they must have quit smoking during their pregnancy. Because the program is part of a grant-funded study, it is only accepting a limited number of people, but they hope the success will allow them to expand in the future. Interested in a longer, healthier life? Stay Quit Moms may help you get there.
