How to Teach Kids Acceptance

A New Anthem For Boys Who Want to Wear Dresses

"Clothes are just the way that we dress" is the refrain heard throughout "Costume Party," a song that encourages acceptance (in a pretty adorable way) from the Brooklyn-based, Grammy-nominated duo The Pop Ups. Inspired by the recent string of stories in the media about children being punished for their unorthodox wardrobe choices, The Pop Ups' Jason Rabinowitz recalled a childhood affinity for a purple silk dress that belonged to his sister.

"I loved that lavender dress and still remember it fondly," Rabinowitz said. "I admire my parents for not shutting it down, for allowing me to be myself." The point of the song and corresponding video is that exploring one's creativity is a part of childhood that should be embraced and encouraged, not neglected, and certainly not punished.

Share the catchy music video with your kids — whether they're boys trying on dresses, girls trying on ties, or anything else. The message is abundantly clear: it's what's inside that counts.
