I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant — When Birth Control Fails

When Birth Control Gets a FAIL

Could someone be pregnant and truly not know it? As crazy as that sounds, it's not such a far-fetched idea for a woman on the pill, using an IUD (intrauterine device), breastfeeding, or using other highly preventative birth control measures. At some point, she'll probably tune into the fact that she's carrying a baby, but it may take her a little while to entertain the notion of buying a pregnancy test. One mother of two declared her pregnancy days a thing of the past and chose to have an IUD implanted as it is one of the most effective contraceptives. Much to the woman's surprise, she discovered she's expecting her third child! A blessing in disguise, the mother was eventually thrilled with the "mishap," but is now considering a vasectomy for her husband. More common than it seems, many moms think they are finished having babies and find themselves sporting a bump when they least expected it. Did you or anyone you know get pregnant while practicing "safe sex"?

Over-all this does not happen on a grand scale. I see FAR MORE pregnancies with those who still believe ridiculous / stupid things like: You can't get pregnant on your period. You can't get pregnant your first time. You can't get pregnant if you douche afterwards. You can't get pregnant if he pulls out. You can't get pregnant with oral copulation. THESE ARE LIES. I cannot stress that enough. You'd be shocked how many women still perpetuate them. The last one...pregnant with oral copulation...is going to raise some eyebrows so I will explain. It is growing more and more common with the younger generation to have oral with multiple partners or repeatedly...as they see this as some weird way of "safe" sex---which is obviously wrong.

This is more common than pharmaceutical companies would like you to realize. I see at least three patients a week in my office who are astonished to find they are pregnant while on some form of BC. While that may alarm some of you I must point out that after careful questioning there was often an error...typically it is someone taking the pill a couple hours later than they normally would have...another med making the pill not so effective...the improper implantation of an IUD...or they simply thought one week delay in coming in for their shot wouldn't matter. Few people do get pregnant on the pill if they take it exactly the same time everyday and have not had to take some other med at some point. Pills today are not as strong as they were 10 years ago=they are formulated "better" but I suppose that is according to who you ask. Men-vasectomy---often never go in to have the "after recovery" sperm count lab work. You'd be shocked how many lie about this little detail....which can be HUGE.

My cousin and a childhood friend - both got pregnant while they'd been on the pill for years, and both realised it after at least 3 months because they were still getting their "period"!

I am SO glad to hear everyone's stories here. I conceived BOTH my children while religiously on the pill. People DO NOT believe me. I always hear "Well, you must have forgotten a day" or "You must have taken an antibiotic or something". Nope. I was crazy careful and haven't had an antibiotic since I was like, 8 years old. It CAN happen, no matter HOW careful you are!

I had been married a year and became pregnant while on the pill at 21, we were going to wait 5 years and were very surprised and happy with the pregnancy. I found out I had PCOS and did not get pregnant again until I was 35, while on the pill again. That pregnancy resulted in a miscarriage. I had Implanon inserted in my arm after that and a year and a half later the doctor said I was still ovulating despite the Implanon, so it was removed and I went on Yaz. That was in November 2008 and now I'm 26 weeks pregnant! Birth control does nothing for me!

my youngest is 8 now, but when she was in preschool she had triplets in her class. they had an older brother and sister that were around 8 and 10. the mom had had her tubes tied after her second child, so the triplets were a real surprise. but it was a really good surprise because she said they had talked many times about how they wished they hadn't decided on no more kids so soon after the second was born :)

A friend of mine growing up was one of two girls, two boys. So with four kids her mom decided to "get fixed." She had her tubes tied and 9 months later another girl. After that, her father had a vasectomy and again 9 months later, another girl. Now with a total of 6 kids, he had another vasectomy and her mom had her tubes tied again. Yikes!

12 days ago I delivered my 3rd child, and he was conceived over the top of my birth control pill. I have taken the pill successfully since I was 16, barring the times we were actively trying to become pregnant, and I was not on *any* other medications. I have a 6 and 9 year old and we thought we were done. In fact, I was due the week of the bar exam (went into labor the night before the bar, meds slowed the contractions so I could take the 2 day test) and I delivered the day after. Despite the 100% unexpectedness of this child, he is the light of our household, a gift to us all. We are so happy to have him in our lives! And as for realizing I was pregnant, it wasn't until I was 8 weeks, and had seen the doctor 2 separate times for unexplained illness that we discovered this baby was on the way!

I got pregnant on BC. I took my pill religiously. Never missed a day. I found out I was pregnant at about 9 weeks! I still got my period and everything. Needless to say I was shocked. It was a blessing in disguise though. =)

I am one of those "what the hell happened" results. My mother had a procedure done that supposedly left her infertile after she had five kids and then there was me... then my little brother.
