Josh and Anna Duggar Expecting Baby

The Duggars Discuss Miscarriage; Is That Comforting?

Sometimes the great expectations of a pregnancy aren't realized. Though Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar may seem to have found the fountain of fertility as evidenced by their 19 children, the parents lost a pregnancy (years ago) after having their firstborn. Sadly, Josh Duggar and his wife, Anna, also suffered a miscarriage a few months back. In sharing the happy news of their current pregnancy with a second child, the couple shared their experience. One report said:

"I was very sad," Anna says. "Josh was a big encouragement to me. It helped us go through the heartbreak to learn that 30 or 40 percent of pregnancies end in miscarriage. That was comforting in some ways."

Does knowing that miscarriage isn't uncommon comfort you as well?

I lost my child at 13 weeks...1 out every 4 people has a miscarriage. Sure, it's common..but it doesn't take away grief.

Well years ago people didn't find out they were pregnant at 10 days. Now, we know immediately. I think once you hear a heart beat it's relatively rare.

It doesn't take the pain away. Knowing others had been through it didn't give me my baby back!

I think it can be comforting to know it's so common because many women seem to blame themselves for a miscarriage. It's nice to know it wasn't something you did. When we announced our pregnancy 2 people felt like pointing out how common a miscarriage is in this early stage. Not something you want to hear about when you are expecting right now!

It surely is good to know how common it is before you get pregnant, so you at least think about the possibility. I don't think anyone can ever be prepared for anything like this, but I'd rather know how likely it is than simply hoping that it won't happen to me.
