Kids Wear Helmets While Ice Skating

Does Your Child Wear a Helmet While Doing Potentially Dangerous Activities?

Head injuries "are super dangerous" according to my 4-year-old who insisted on wearing his bike helmet as he flew down the cement speed slides and shot up a rope web like a spider during a recent trip to the park. While fellow parents credited my husband and I with the ingenious idea, we laughed because it was a concept that hadn't occurred to us. We have our kids strap on their helmets when they ride their like bikes, scooters, or skateboards, but that's about it. In the weeks since my lil guy gave me the tip, I've noticed other children wearing helmets while climbing trees and ice skating. Do you take the precaution for other activities?

I only hope most parents realize that bike helmets are designed to protect against skull fracture and do next to nothing to prevent concussions. (And I should know, having suffered from a bad concussion while wearing a helmet.) They are designed to prevent you from smashing your skull open should you hit pavement or a car or a tree at speed - that is all. By all means, have your child wear a bike helmet on the bike. But if you insist on using a helmet for other activities, at least use an appropriate helmet. Helmets are not created equal and a bike helmet will do almost no good on the ice, or if you fall from a tree. For ice skating, use a hockey helmet. For tree climbing (seriously?), a rock climbing helmet. One last note...please fit your kids' helmets properly! Most of the children I see riding bikes have helmets that wouldn't protect against anything at all, simply because they're not fitted correctly. Any bike shop (not necessarily where you bought the helmet, like Walmart, but a real bike shop) should be happy to fit your kid's helmet if you're not 100% sure about it.

We're big believers in the bike helmet. My tot wears his ice skating and sledding too!
