The Lancet Denies Link Between Vaccines and Autism

Are You Surprised by the Delinking of Vaccines and Autism?

Twelve years after the medical and parenting communities were rocked by the release of a study linking the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine to autism, the world's most renowned medical journal is retracting the paper that made the initial claims. This morning, the editors of The Lancet announced that the researcher behind the paper was not honest in his presentation of the data and "it has become clear that several elements of the 1998 paper by Wakefield . . . are incorrect."

The original publication of the paper set off a firestorm of controversy, pitting many physicians and the American Academy of Pediatrics against parents of children diagnosed with the disorder, including Jenny McCarthy, who has been an outspoken critic of the current vaccination schedule.

Are you surprised by The Lancet's announcement this morning?

Drug companies no longer have the power or funding that people think they do. I know this for a fact. They can not even give pens or unlimited sample meds to drs offices anymore, and the days of taking a dr to the golf course have been over for years. A credible, reliable institution will not attach their name to a study that has been skewed because of the intense media scrutiny these days. I had many drug reps have to cancel scheduled meetings and presentations because they ran out of funds. They are no longer as powerful as they used to be.

I agree with Anon #11. I'm not going to trust blindly because doctor's are not always correct. YOU and your child have to live with the consequences of a horrible reaction to vaccines, not the doctor. Think about why they're pushing the H1N1 vaccine so much. Clearly they're making money. I continually second guess the health care system. We continue to vaccinate our daughter on a different schedule and make sure there are no heavy metals/formaldehyde/thimerasol in the vaccines. Not because we truly believe they cause or are linked to autism, but because those things in your body can't be doing anything good.

I can't believe it's taken them this long to retract it! After all of the other studies done, both here in the states and internationally, they should have done this years ago. All that paper did was instill fear in parents. I don't like Jenny McCarthy because she gives people false hope. If something worked for her, great. I'm glad her kid is doing well, because I want all kids to be their best. But that doesn't mean that she discovered a miracle, and I don't think she should have put it out there like that.
