Mom Gives Birth in Airport Bathroom

Mom Gives Birth in Airport Bathroom

Traveling during Thanksgiving weekend rarely makes us feel grateful, but here's a story about a traveling mom who has something to be thankful for: a healthy baby boy, delivered in the airport bathroom after her flight!

The woman (as yet unidentified) got off her flight at at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, walked to the women's bathroom in concourse D, and moments later, gave birth to a healthy baby boy. Mother and child were taken to the hospital shortly afterward by the airport's fire and rescue department.

Airport Mom is not the only one who has given birth recently in a strange place. One mom gave birth at 35,000 feet in the air after getting the go-ahead from her doctor to fly; another gave birth in a traffic jam in Washington, D.C.

I flew a little more than a month from my due date and all was well, as for most women who do, but you also want to take all precautions you can. I went for a checkup less than 48 hours from the flight to get the all clear rather than relying on anything general. I did ask questions about how likely it is to give birth early (my doc even gave me referrals to go to in the other city if I were to find myself in labor at the other end of the flight!), and we discussed if there was family history of giving birth early as that can be a factor. But sometimes, you really need to be somewhere and driving isn't an option so if going is more important than the possibility of early labor and you have your doc's ok, do what you got to do.

Women are strong. She's much less likely to have complications giving birth spontaneously on her own than in a hospital with an OB. And sadly, I'd bet the germ count is similar between the two. Hospitals are supposed to be sanitary, but they're crazy germ factories.
