Mommy's Lil Helper: Turn Kitchen Gadgets Into Sand Toys

Last week, while spending time on the beach and building sandcastles with my kids, I realized that though the molding kits are tailor-made for the task, there's a more economical and ecological way to create sand art — using gadgets collected from the kitchen. When wooden spoons and spatulas have worn out their culinary welcome, they make perfect utensils for writing in the sand and carving out details on sediment sculptures. In the same vein, melon ballers and ice cream scoopers are just the right size to scoop wet sand into palace gates and wall and building ornamentation. To ensure safe play, stick to wooden, stainless steel, plastic, melamine, and silicone wares, and leave glass and ceramic items in the cabinet.

I upgraded all of my kitchen gadgets recently and many of the old gadgets went to my daughter, which many are now in her sandbox.

Greggie — this is an idea for after you are finished using your utensils in the kitchen. That's why it says "worn out their culinary welcome".

This falls into the category we discussed in the swim diaper thread. I'm not a germaphobe at all, but the thought of using my kitchen utensils in sand grosses me out to no end. I know I can clean them, even sterilize them. But I could never use them again once they'd been digging in sand, no matter how illogical the thought pattern.
