Ohio School Offers Kids Cash For Showing Up (DETAILS)

Ohio School Offers Kids Cash For Showing Up (DETAILS)

Have you ever gotten your children to eat their veggies by dangling the reward of desert?

Prompted by a 14% graduation rate, Cincinnati's Dohn Community High School is doing just that. After the Ohio Department of Education designated an "academic emergency," Dohn is trying out a new way to get kids to come to school. They will pay seniors $25 weekly and underclassmen $10 weekly in Visa gift cards for being on time to class and for not getting into any trouble. Every student who is eligible for a gift card each week will also have $5 deposited into a savings account that is only available upon graduation.

Although the program has received some criticism, the school's Chief Administrative Officer, Ken Furrier, stands firmly behind it. “Our student population is 90 percent poverty,” Furrier told CBS Cleveland. “Money is important to them. We can’t teach them if they’re not here.”

Furrier has already seen benefits from the program, class attendance is up 15%.

I think this is a fabulous idea. Sometimes we just have to find what 'works' and if this works for this particular school and their particular students, then so be it. Maybe it represents the working life - don't come to work - don't get paid. I think when they get their money on graduation though it needs to be decided together with staff where it may be spent - ie: college, higher education etc..

I think this is a terrible idea! If kids want to be stupid and not go to school, that's their own bad decisions. When they are working minimum wage at 50, maybe they will realize their mistakes. The idea of paying kids to go to school is ridiculous! (But they should look into the reasons why the kids aren't going and if they don't have a ride, maybe help with that.)

It's a great idea, IF and ONLY IF the school can afford to live up to their promise for ALL students and are FAIR about rewarding it. Plus if they do it this year, future students are going to expect the same thing for them when they get in those grades.

I think this was tried in the UK just to encourage kids to stay on ( my cynical mind thinks it's a way to keep unemployment figures down more than an incentive . ) However monetary rewards do work with some kids . Linking it to both attendance and behavior gives a classroom which is more conducive to learnng . The gap between rich and poor is widening greatly in terms of graduating high school , reading and math abilities at grade 4 and 8 so this method could well be a good start in getting the idea into poorer kids heads that the only way out of poverty is to get a good education which gives better job opportunities and salaries . The school say they had a huge drop out rate and attendance is up 15% which suggests it is working ! I'm all for trying anything which might stop the generational poverty we are seeing more and more in this country

I watched a documentary on a school in a similar situation. I think it's a great idea. Desperate times call for desperate measures. The fact that it's on a visa card cuts down that they'll be able to use the money for drugs and such.
