10 Outdoor Toys to Jump-Start Summer

May 24 2010 - 7:00am

Summer's in our sights as we head into Memorial Day weekend. With thoughts turning to the beach and backyard barbecues it's time to get lil ones off the couch and out into the fresh air. With new outdoor toys, tots will be hard-pressed to find a reason to spend any time indoors during the warm weather months. Here are 10 toys to kick off the Summer season.

My First Bubbles Peek-a-Boo Surprise ($20)

No need to worry about spillage with Little Kids' My First Bubbles Peek-a-Boo Surprise [1]. Instead of maneuvering a bubble wand and dripping soapy water, toddlers just have to move the toy's handle for the bubbles to begin appearing from a hidden whale.

Nerf Super Soaker Shot Blast ($20)

Two of Summer's favorite toy companies have collaborated on a surefire hit – the Nerf Super Soaker Shot Blast [2]. The lightweight water gun shoots up to 25 feet and barely needs to be pumped in order to soak unsuspecting friends.

Step2 Gather & Grille Playhouse ($400)

Tots can play just like mom and dad with the Step2 Gather & Grille Playhouse [3]. Complete with a kitchen, a patio with a grill and a working doorbell, the house encourages creative play and socialization among kids.

iPlay Stomp Launcher ($13)

A guaranteed crowd pleaser, the Stomp Launcher [4] will have kids lining up to give it a go in no time. Simply stomping on the launcher will send soft foam rockets shooting into the air for others to run and catch.

Sky Balls ($8)

They may look like simple rubber balls, but Sky Balls [5] will bounce higher than any ball you have ever seen before – up to 75 feet into the air! The oxygen and helium-filled balls will keep kids challenging each other to see who can send them higher.

Step 2 Nature Station Playhouse ($250)

Create your own backyard nature watch tower with the Nature Station Playhouse [6]. The tree house-looking playhouse comes with binoculars, butterfly nets, a lantern, microscope, bug catcher and more – quickly turning your television-loving tot into a budding entomologist.

Banzai Cannonball Splash ($40)

Think of it as a souped-up slip and slide. The Cannonball Splash [7] is a six-foot long water slide that ends in an over-sized splash pool. Designed for tots as young as five, the inflatable toy has soft sides allowing for a soft landing each time.

Double Play All-in-One Sports Trainer ($60)

Save space (and money) with one sports toy that encompasses soccer, football, hockey, and basketball in one. The 7-foot high inflatable comes with both a soccer and basketball as well as football targets.

Makin' Mud Pies ($40)

A nice change from the typical sand table, the Makin' Mud Pies [8] table encourage lil ones to get their hands dirty with a real working sink, a mix master and molds to create perfect mud pies.

Seaside Sidekicks Sand Cupcake Set ($15)

Melissa and Doug have brought the cupcake craze onto the beach with the Seaside Sidekicks Sand Cupcake Set [9]. The 12-piece set is filled with everything lil ones need to create their favorite (non-edible) snack!
