Are Parents to Blame When Teens Get Pregnant?

Are Parents to Blame If Live-In Boyfriend Gets Teen Pregnant?

Is cohabitation the precursor to teen pregnancy? Last night's episode of MTV's 16 & Pregnant followed Megan, 16, and her live-in boyfriend Nathan, 19. The couple conceived their baby while living under the same roof, since Megan's mother allowed Nathan to move in (because he was arguing with his own parents about playing video games) while her husband was stationed in Afghanistan. When Megan's father came home on military leave, he voiced his disappointment that the parents-to-be could no longer be kids. That said, isn't it rather adult to allow two teens to room together?Photos copyright 2010 MTV

i dont watch this show so maybe i am missing something but if they wanted to live together they were probably already.. doing it. what the parents (mom) missed was a PERFECT opportunity to get some contraceptives for her daughter. Maybe IUD or injection or patch... something that his hard to mess up. oh well, wish them the best :)

My parents were incredibly strict and didn't even let us talk about boys. My sister still got pregnant at 16. In this case, the mom shouldn't have gone against the dad's wishes and quite frankly she looks like a pushover.

if a parent doesn't teach their child certain relational boundaries, who will?

Basically I think people need to take charge of their own decisions. I don't like it when people blame others for the choices that THEY made. So yeah, the parents can open the door, but it's still the teen's choice whether or not to walk through it.

they still could have had sex and gotten pregnant even if they weren't allowed to live together, but the parents are just as much to blame as the the teens. allowing two teenagers to live together is not only insane and stupid, but also like giving drugs to a drug addict. this has unfortunately, happened to the sisters of many of my students (I teach elementary), and I agree with Anonymous 3 that the parents who allow it should absolutely be charged as accessories to statutory rape if their underaged daughter or son's girlfriend gets pregnant while living under their roof - maybe then it would happen less...

I don't think living together or not living together is what makes babies. :)

I do not think living together caused this. Believe me, the teens would have found a way otherwise, too. I can understand how the mother would maybe even be MORE comfortable having the boyfriend there and getting to know him and all that. The fact that the girl did get pregnant though is partially to blame on the parents. They ought to have talked to the daughter (or maybe even the daughter and the boyfriend) about protection.
