Shop Smarter: The Mom's Guide to Pesticides in Produce

Jun 21 2012 - 12:02pm

The Environmental Working Group recently released its 2012 Shopper's Guide to Pesticides [1], a great resource for parents looking to understand the ins and outs of providing their families with the safest, healthiest fruits and veggies. Unfortunately, some of kids' favorite foods wound up on the "Dirty Dozen" list this year — a list of the most dangerous foods in terms of pesticides. Click through to see what's safe, and what's not, and for some kid-friendly recipes that will have your tots begging for more this Summer.

The "Dirty Dozen"

You don't have to eliminate these fruits and veggies from your family's diet, but when you do purchase them, buying organic is best!

  2. Celery
  3. Sweet bell pepper
  4. Peaches
  5. Strawberries
  6. Nectarines (imported)
  7. Grapes
  8. Spinach
  9. Lettuce
  10. Cucumbers
  11. Blueberries (domestic)
  12. Potatoes

The EWG also recommends exercising caution when purchasing green beans and leafy greens (kale and collard greens). While they don't meet the traditional "Dirty Dozen" criteria, they have been shown to contain highly toxic insecticides.
