A Serene but Playful Light Blue and Lime Green Nursery

Mar 7 2013 - 7:52am

Interior decorator Vanessa De Vargas runs LA-based design firm Turquoise [1], where she refurbishes one-of-a-kind antiques and designs chic, modern spaces for her clients. When a friend called on her for help with her nursery, Vanessa rose to the occasion, creating this special space that merges calm serenity and cheery playfulness. Click through for a nursery tour, complete with Vanessa's commentary.

Made For Mama

"The inspiration [for this nursery] came from the mother — we wanted the room to reflect what she liked," Vanessa says. "We knew that we wanted to use lime green and robin's egg blue, but also that we wanted to mix in kids' items with more mature pieces."

First Things First

Before getting started on designing your nursery, Vanessa says to think about the colors that you're drawn to and find most soothing.

"You can go by trends, but moms spend a lot of time in nurseries, and the room should reflect who they are as much as the child," she added. "Pin items that draw your attention, you will see a common theme. Pick what you like and what you respond to."

Splurge vs. Save

When it comes to managing your nursery decor budget, Vanessa suggests spending on quality furniture — the crib, changing table, and storage pieces are going to get a lot of use!

Rock On

If there's one piece of advice that Vanessa can offer to moms-to-be on purchasing a glider or rocker, it's to try out your options before buying one. "I've heard some bad stories of cool-looking but not-so-comfortable gliders," Vanessa says. "Please do your research and sit in those chairs!"

On the Wall

Vanessa's go-to resources for artwork are flea markets, Etsy, and Craigslist. For more modern options, she suggests Michelle Armas [7], 20x200 [8], and Sharon Montrose's Animal-Print Shop [9].

Modern Color Combos

For a fresh and unexpected color palette, Vanessa suggests dark royal blue with tan and light gray; pink, magenta, and orange; emerald green and light pink; or teal and yellow.

Where to Save

"Save on lighting, accessories, wall decor, and shelving," Vanessa says. "There are so many independent vendors on Etsy that have great-looking wall decorations for a quarter of the price. The artwork and rhino head in this room are from Etsy shops!"

Mix and Match

The combo of playful, kid-centric pieces mixed with more mature decor elements (like the custom ikat valances and Serena & Lily [13] crib sheets) account for much of the success of this room.

Space-Savers

When floor space is at a premium, add vertical shelving or storage units on the walls.

Shop Till You Drop

When it comes to nursery decor and furnishings, Vanessa is a big fan of David Netto [16] and Serena & Lily [17].
