Postpartum Preeclampsia

How to Spot Signs of Postpartum Preeclampsia

Following the birth of a child, the body goes through some more miraculous changes. From the shrinking of the uterus to the production of milk, our bodies are truly amazing. Each woman's body reacts differently to birth and it is to these differences that we must pay attention. While some women experience the signs of preeclampsia during pregnancy – swelling, high blood pressure, and protein in urine — others do not until after the birth.

Postpartum preeclampsia is a serious but controllable condition that can occur in women who did not experience any of the signs while pregnant. The condition usually comes in the 48 hours after birth but can take up to six weeks to appear.

According to the Mayo Clinic:

Signs and symptoms of postpartum preeclampsia include severe, persistent headaches and blurry vision. The cause isn't well understood. Although postpartum preeclampsia is a serious condition that requires prompt medical attention, it is usually short-lived. With proper treatment, blood pressure usually returns to normal within a few days or weeks with no long-term adverse effects.

Women who notice postpartum swelling of their feet, as well as high blood pressure and headaches should contact their doctors immediately. If the condition is not treated quickly, it can lead to seizures and hypertension. While treatment is usually simple, it needs to be started as soon as possible.

Did you experience postpartum preeclampsia, and what did you do to resolve the issue?

I had my son in July 2010. I was around 110 lbs when I got pregnant and never hand any bp problems towards the middle of my pregnancy I started swell and was ti me that was normal. When my son arrived I noticed swelling was increasing and not mention I did have a c section. Within 48 hours a massive ungodly indescribable headache came on. I screamed for the nurse and informed them that my head was killing. They checked my bp did a straight Cath and said I wad ok but just that bp wad a little high but that's normal. I was released that day and within 48 hours of Beeing home still headache felt dizzy and had no energy and was a little disoriented. I remember going into kitchen and left side of body went numb. I decided to sit back down and not to mention I wad on the phone during this with my little brother who was across county serving in military. Anyways I seatback down and talking with my brother my body starting to go into seizures. I work up in the ambulance bc I blacked out. I continue seizing on way to hospital and at hospital. The docs there could not do much so life flighted me to the osu hospital. There they did cat scans MRI bein injections and so on. After beibg incubated and in a slight a coma they told my family I had a mini stroke and wad caused from post eclampsia and had PRESS syndrome and that docs should of never discharged me. I was put on seizure med bp meds and several more had to see neurologists and several trips to family doc to monitor bp. Its been three years and I'm 27 now. Want one more child but afraid this mite happen again. To this day im still struggling with anxiety and havingvhard time keeping weight off bc all the meds I was on caused weight gain and prevented me from driving and work in so put on 50 lbs.

I had my first child on march 14th 2012. I developed pre-eclampsia the day before I had her, doctors decided to induce me because my blood pressure started to spike. Luckily, it was the second day after delivery, before they released me from the hospital that my blood pressure started to rise again. I was put on magnesium for twelve hours and place on 300mg of labetalol every eight hours. I was sent home the next afternoon. I was back in the hospital two days later because the dosage wasn't high enough. They upped my labetalol to 500mg every eight hours and had me take 25mg hydralazine every twelve hours. I'm six weeks post partum (technically yesterday) and I am now down to 300mg of labetalol every twelve hours. It makes me nervous to be off of hydralazine because I really felt it worked. I had crazy high blood pressure, even though I didn't have headaches. I maxed out at 180/121. I had no idea what was going on and why they wouldn't release me until the morning after they took me off of magnesium. I'm 23, I've been pretty healthy my whole life and the pregnancy was pretty normal other than severe morning sickness first trimester and developing pre-eclampsia at 38 weeks along. I wish we could figure out what causes it, and better ways to prevent or treat it, or at least make treatment much faster. My husband had to take extra days off of work that we couldn't really afford to help me take care of our baby. It was such a huge mess. I hope it's under control now.

I COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND, AND I WILL APOLOGIZE AHEAD OF TIME FOR ANY MISPELLING BC OF THE STROKE THAT I HAD! I AM A STAY AT HOME MOM,OF TWO BEAUTIFUL CHILDREN , AND 25 YEARS OLD. I TOO MISSED THE REAL FIRST FEW MONTHS OF MY BABIES LIFE. I WAS GOING TO THIS OBGYN WHO HAS SO MANY DIFF DOCTORS THAT YOU NEVER SEEN THE SAME ONE. WELL ALL THROUGH THE PREG MY BLOOD PRESSURE WAS WHAT SEEMED TO THEM AS NORMAL, BUT I USUALLY HAVE LOW BLOOD PRESSURE ANYWAY. WELL ANYWAY THROUGH THE WHOLE PREGNACY I HAD ALL THE OTHER SYMPTOMS OF ECLAMPSIA, HOWEVER THEY NEVER TESTED ME FOR IT! WELL I HAD MY BABY NOV 19TH, 2010 MY BLOOD PRESSURE ELEVATED AND I HAD A SEVERE HEADACHE, SO THEY GAVE ME PRESSURE MEDS, AND AFTER I HAD THE BABY, I AUTOMATICALLY WENT BACK TO NORMAL. I HAD MY TUBES TIED, AND WAS SENT HOME THE DAY AFTER! WELL A WEEK LATER I HAD TO RETURN TO THE ER, I HAD CELLULITIS ASKED THEN ABOUT ALL THE SWELLING, THEY SAID THAT WAS NORMAL, AND SENT ME HOME WITH ATIBOTICS. WELL LONG STORY SHORT, I WOUND UP IN ICU BC OF AN ECLAMPTIC SEZURE LEADING A STROKE. DOCTORS WERE SURE I WOULD NOT MAKE IT, AND IF I DID I WOULD BE A VEGETABLE, BUT HERE I AM BLESSED TO BE ALIVE! BUT YOU KNOW YOUR DOCTORS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT HAS HAPPEND TO ALL OF YOU! HAS ANYONE DECIDED TO SUE, I AM JUST CURIOUS, BC I AM CUNSULTING WITH A LAWYER, I LOST MY JOB, FILED FOR DISABILITY, AND WE HAVE LOST SO MUCH! HOPE EVERYONE HAS A LONG, HAPPY, AND HEALTHY LIFE LOVE ALWAYS!
