Pregnancy Klutz

Why Didn't Anybody Tell Me: Klutz

Pregnancy turned me into a klutz. I guess I should have expected as much. As fingers swell and ankles balloon, it makes sense that agility would take a nosedive.

Slicing tomatoes became a harrowing task as my fingertips quickly became bloodied and bandaged. Even walking became a conscious activity. About halfway through my pregnancy, my husband and I took a babymoon to Italy, where I fell in the middle of a busy cobblestone street with scooters zooming by me. Luckily, the incident didn't cause bodily harm to baby or me — just my ego. Unfortunately, there's not much you can do about being clumsy. The only two things that helped me were better shoes and heightened awareness.

Were you a klutz when you were pregnant?

Not really, but I always expected to be. My sister had all her kids before I had any, and she always said she could tell when she was pregnant because she started dropping everything.

Great! I already have to pee as much as a pregnant woman, and I'm incredibly clumsy! I cannot imagine what will happen if I ever get pregnant. Maybe I'll suddenly be very coordinated.

I was a walking disaster when I was preg. I never had a bad fall or anything, I was just constantly running into everything and I had horrible butterfingers. My hips and shoulders were always all bruised up because I would run into doorways, or crash into tables. I had no concept of where my personal space ended anymore and any stationary object in my path was at risk.

I was so klutzy during my first pregnancy, almost to the point of being dangerous. I dropped a knife on my belly when I was unloading the dishwasher because I lost my grip on it and stabbed myself. I just got a tiny cut, but it was really scary. I also dropped things repeatedly and ran into a lot of furniture and walls.

No, thank goodness. I never got swollen ankles or big hands, so I was lucky. My coordination and balance never seemed to be affected. I seem to be more of a klutz now that I've had the baby, probably because I'm always in such a hurry to do everything. Just this past weekend I tripped going down the stairs because I was trying to rush while baby was napping. Oops.
