Pregnancy and Taste

Lil Community: Did Pregnancy Affect Your Taste?

Pregnancy can turn our bodies upside down! Girlwithagoal shared this question in The Mommy Club group.

I used to love peanut butter and mustard. Love it. Not together, obviously, but they were two of my favorite tastes. Since having my first child I can't even smell either without feeling sick. And it doesn't stop with my favorite flavors. I've found my taste buds have completely changed since becoming a mom. I can't say it's all healthier, but new foods and distinctive tastes strike my fancy and I don't really care for my old faves. Has that happened to anyone else? Is this all psychosomatic?

During my second pregnancy I couldn't stomach chicken, most vegetables--especially broccoli, garlic, basil, milk, or ice cream. Oh and the taste of water made me throw up. I lived primarily on fish, fresh fruit, and gatorade. Could've been worse, healthy eating wise. My daughter is almost 2 now and to this day I cannot even smell broccoli or pesto without feeling ill and pretty much all dairy products except cheese trigger my gag reflex. But I'm ok with chicken again. And water.

Yup - first pregnancy all I wanted was veggies, literally, id eat an entire plate of just veggies. That stayed after until my 2nd pregnancy 2 years later, when i lost ALL taste for veggies. I HATED them. I had to force them down every meal and it was absolute torture. I just wanted fried foods and as much meat as possible. I had the baby and I'm happily back to my veggie loving normal self, though I do have more meat then before, but i no longer crave disgusting things like long john silvers fried fish...lol

I forgot to mention too... that all my cravings (meat and sweets) still exist 5 months post pregnancy.

Oh forgot to mention the strangest thing...have not been able to chew gum since becomin pregnant...it feels so weird to me. Something about the texture and the favor...I tried many times and have to spit it out right away...soo weird...

It is so strange...used to be super healthy, mostly eating fish, veggies and chicken. During my first and now third trimester mostly craving carbs, milk, cheese, beef, cereal and milkshakes...anything icecold. Could not even really look at chicken or veggies. Was always craving McD's cheeseburgers, which I had not touched in 18 years. Everything went back to normal during the 2nd trimester though...started eating more salads and fruit again, but now all those strange cravings are back in my third trimester.....sooo odd.

Before I was pregnant I rarely ate red meat and sweets... but, now I crave for a big steak every week and want something sweet every day

As soon as I got pregnant, I fell in LOVE with coffee. What used to be a necessary evil, and only tolerable in fancy espresso drinks, became one of my favorite things ever. I also lost my taste for pop, which was awesome.

i haven't been able to eat broccoli (one of my old favorites). it's hard to even write about it! thankfully, i have been able to eat other veggies (since i am am vegetarian), but i have been craving processed foods, like Kraft singles (so embarrassing)! At least I have been craving a lot of fruit, as well.

Tiffany - I am getting sinus infections like crazy now (pregnant with #3) and the are horrendous! I was hoping they would go away after pregnancy but now you are scaring me! But my tastes totally did change while I was pregnant with #2 all I wanted was spicy spicy food. I ate tons of Thai, hot sauce on everything (not good with heartburn) and it stayed even after I had the baby. And I was never into spicy food before.

I get sinus infections like a mo-fo now. Not blaming the last pregnancy, but the timing is awfully suspicious...

I'm in the same boat as you. Making speghetti is no longer allowed for me. I used to love it before I was pregnant and now it makes me vomit. Which totally bums me out because its such a cheap and easy meal to make. Tuna also makes me very sick. I think it all has to deal with your sense of smell too.

My sense of taste hasn't changed... but I get allergies now. I never did before my girl was born.
