A friend of mine said that when her nephew was born, she gave him the classic children's book, The Giving Tree, accompanied by a baby apple tree. I thought that was really sweet, and it inspired my hubby and I to plant a tree for our baby.
We chose a Pagoda Dogwood, since it's native to Vermont, and because we planted it in a shady area (an apple tree wouldn't survive). This tree flowers cream-colored fragrant clusters, which grow into little purple berries the birds can eat. And in the Fall, the leaves turn reddish purple before they drop. I'm excited to take a picture of our baby in front of the tree when we come home from the hospital, and to take one every year on their birthday. Cute idea, right? Have you planted anything for your babies?
