Pregnancy and Vegetarians

Pregnancy Makes Some Vegetarians Crave Meat

Pregnancy cravings can get the best of an expectant mama. A chocolate bar here, a scoop of peanut butter there. Researchers say that a woman's desire for certain foods represents her body's lack of certain nutrients. For some mamas-to-be, the cravings can create an entire lifestyle change.

For Tiffani Thiessen, who is due with her first baby this Spring, having a bun in the oven is wreaking havoc on the vegetarian's diet. She told People,

"I was a vegetarian for many, many, many years and all of a sudden I started to crave red meat. Crazy enough, I had a steak before I left tonight and I would never have eaten one before. One day I just woke up and craved meat."

Adding meat to a previously vegetarian diet can be tricky – often requiring gradual introduction in an effort to not disrupt the digestive system. If you stuck to a nonmeat diet, did you stick to it during pregnancy?

Although being a vegetarian for years and later moving on to eating fish and chicken, I also started craving pork and red meat during my pregnancy. I believe you have to listen to your body and pregnancy is certainly not a time to "control" your body and this is not a made up thing at all. Although I have been mostly only able to eat sausages, ground beef, meat filled pastas and cheeseburgers. For some reason I do not think I could ever eat a steak. That just seems gross to me. Not sure why. Actually chicken has become so much less appealing to me.

I've been a Lacto-Ovo-Vegetarian for almost 15 years. When I was pregnant three years ago meat was more repulsive to me than ever. People kept insisting I was going to crave it with the pregnancy, but I never did in the slightest. I couldn't stomach the smell or even to look at it.

Anon @ 8: Your body is smart and craves what it desperately needs -- this is incorrect. According to the Mayo Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy, the whole "crave what you need" theory is wrong. Craving ice cream does not mean your body needs saturated fat, and not craving citrus fruit does not mean you *don't* need vitamin C.

I was a vegetarian and started craving meat with the past two pregnancies. The problem was that I couldn't handle the raw meat without feeling so queasy that I had to run out of the kitchen. The body craves what it needs. I was very low on iron and my body was telling me. My husband handled and cooked the meat and my pregnancy became more healthy with the much needed iron and I didn't need a blood transfusion after giving birth.

As a pregnant vegan, I cannot imagine forgetting all my beliefs simply because I have a "craving". Will power and beliefs are stronger than a passing indulgence. It seems like pregnant, "vegetarian" celebrities love claiming that they "had" to eat some sort of meat in interviews.

We aren't vegetarians, but we did eat a mostly vegetable diet, but i was only a few weeks into my pregnancy when i started absolutely craving thick juicy steaks and roast beef with mustard... it had probably been 9 or 10 months since i had had either, we just don't eat much meat and if we do its chicken or pork. Sadly, vegetables became an extreme turn off and i mostly have to choke them down.

I wasn't a vegetarian, but with both my pregnancies I couldn't stomach chicken at all! On the other hand, I couldn't get enough steak or ground beef!

I'm the opposite. I normally LOVE meat but all I want is dairy now. I can't even eat chicken.

I thought it was crazy how much I craved red meat during my pregnancy. I am not a vegetarian but I rarely ate red meat before my pregnancy; seriously, only once or twice a month. I had to control myself during my pregnancy. I was always up for a good roast, steak or burger! And my grandmother introduced me to standing rib roast, something I would never have ate before. My LO is now 9 months and I'm back to poultry and fish.

I haven't eaten red meat or pork in at least 10 years but I've been craving a BLT and indulged the other night!
