Pregnant Women Are Smug Video

Were You Smug While Pregnant?

They say there is a bit of truth behind every joke. Case in point? This video treasure condemning (and somehow, celebrating) the self-contentedness of expectant women from comedian duo Garfunkel and Oates. Having carried two babies — and another on the way! — I can recognize and admit the sense of accomplishment that comes along with pregnancy. It's hard to express to nonmothers, but heck, I'm making a baby over here. Of course, that's a sentiment that can rub single women or those actively trying to get pregnant the wrong way. I'll let the funny girls say it for me:

Pregnant women are smug. Everyone knows it, but nobody says it cause they're pregnant. . . "So is it a boy or a girl?" "Oh, we know, but we're not telling." "What are you gonna name it? "Oh, we know, but we're not telling."

This really isn't all that funny and not just because I am pregnant but if you think of all the stuff pregnant women have to go through to get that baby out we can be as smug and say whatever smart a** comments we want. I mean you do have some that are annyoing (luckily not me) but sheesh give them a break!

Muppets, I'm with ya on that one. Suddenly when women I know are having kids its suddenly like being pregnant is the most awesome thing in the world. I get that creating a little bundle of life is great and moving, but please don't try and make me feel like my life is meaningless or empty because I don't have one right now. Worse part is when i say I hope to have a child someday, because then suddenly they slap a clock on your forehead and are constantly asking "When?"

LMAO @ macgirl. I couldn't agree more. The women I've known who have acted that way during their pregnancies are no different in their unpregnant state.

Oh boy what kind of women are some of you hanging out with! I bet they are smug and annoying regardless of their gestational status ;-)

Having graduated from an all-women's school only five years ago, a lot of my classmates have gone on to get married and have children. I have to go on Facebook and see their pages and how. It seems like they're all in a big competition with each other to see who can marry and get knocked up the fastest. And some of them try to rub it in the faces of those who haven't experienced any of those things. Ugh.

HA! Maybe it will be different when I'm pregnant, but I'm sick of condescending comments. I love the "everything seemed so meaningless before I was pregnant." Wow. Thank you. Think about the subtext there: "Everything you're going through is 'meaningless' compared to what I'm experiencing. Hope you eventually have children so your life doesn't suck."

Nah, not amused. Pregnant women are also sick of the exact same questions all the time, as well as free-for-all comments about their size. If you're so bored by the answer to 'boy or girl?' and you're only being polite, then just don't be polite, some of us have anxious and sick pregnancies and the questions and comments can be really hard to answer.
