Reinventing the Advent Calendar

The countdown to Christmas has come a long way from the two-for-a-dollar advent calendars I had as a kid.

No more chalky chocolates found behind cardboard doors, now the elaborate calendars can be filled with presents, candies, trinkets, and toys. Several versions are made by toy companies and others are handcrafted keepsakes. And, most of them will set you back a pretty penny.

Whatever you're using to count, when you're a kid 25 days seems to take forever.

I love advent calendars. And I was happy to discover that they are not just for christmas anymore! Check out the Election Day Advent Calendar. Its a fun twist on the holiday classic and totally non-partisan. My friend has one on her fridge and opens up a-door-a-day with her daughter. Heres the link:

I purchased a wooden advent calender at I was surprised to come across this at a tea shop, but am glad I did. I do not want to fill the little doors with candy or toys. The kids get enough of this all through December. I decided that I would place little pieces of paper with fun winter and holiday activities for us to do as a family. For example, we will be going on a nature walk while enjoying a cup of hot cocoa. We will also decorate a gingerbread house, read "Twas the Night Before Christmas" to name a few.

I just got one of these at Bed, Bath & Beyond. I had fun filling the little doors with non-candy treats. Can't wait for Dec. 1.

We have the Playmobile calender. I love it. Those toys seriously last FOREVER. Beware of choking hazardish tiny accessories though.

My kids actually have no idea calendars with candy even exist. *lol* We have a countdown board for Advent and an Advent wreath, but the last thing I want is more candy or little toys right now.
