Right or Wrong: Parents in Florida Want Child Out of School Over Peanut Allergy

Right or Wrong: Parents in Florida Want Child Out of School Over Peanut Allergy

With food allergies on the rise and more families and schools impacted by them, this story out of Florida, and reported by CNN, feels timely:

Parents in this Edgewater, FL. community are mad about the impact of new, federally mandated rules to protect the life of a little girl in a public school there. Her allergy is so severe that exposure to peanut dust could kill her. But the classroom safety measures, which include mandatory hand washing and mouth rinsing after lunch for all children, feel burdensome to the families of her classmates. Alleging that compliance takes 30 minutes per day and that this time would be better spent on learning, they've taken to the streets to picket. They say their children should not have to accommodate the girl with the allergy and that she should instead leave the school.

Dr. Scott Sicherer, Professor of Pediatrics at Jaffe Food Allergy Institute at Mount Sinai Medical Center, who was asked by CNN to comment on the story, points out that the protesting parents may not have considered two very important points: one, that the child's allergy is a true, legally protected disability, and two, that the community (both parents and kids) could learn a lot by working together to protect her, rather than rallying to exclude her.

Has your child's school imposed burdensome restrictions because of food allergies? Do you think the Edgewater parents have a valid point?

Katy Garland, I totally agree with you that's not fair. One kid has a reaction to the ingredients in mouthwash, but is still made to use it because it doesn't kill her. I do agree that washing hands and brushing and rising your teeth and mouth is a very good thing.....I don't think i could ever send my child to school if it was that severe. someone else on here said that all it takes is for another child to sneak a cookie or snack into the school/room for that little girl to die. Are the parents seriously willing to take that chance???!!!!! i would not risk my child's life for anything!!!!! i am here to protect my child. I don't agree with the parents picketing, but this little girl's parents really need to think......is it worth risking her life just to go to a public school?????

This is insane. I can't even believe this story is real! She has a food allergy for crying out loud, not the plague. Why should she be treated like an outcast? And the person who said put her in a separate class with kids with allergies.....you are no better than those people in Florida. This child has rights and I hope her parents fight hard for them!!

My children are homeschooled anyway, but if one of them could die from exposure to something most kids eat all the time, I definitely would not send them to school! You have to be responsible for your own child and their safety and welfare. Sometimes this means doing things differently than other people. Homeschooled kids are normal too. It is sad, however, that the parents of the other students are modeling such childish behavior for their children.

I think that the selfishness and disregard for others shown by this community is really sad. If it were their child they would every precaution taken to make their child safe, why should this child deserve any less. Have some compassion people.

WOW!! The audacity! Its so sad to see what our society has fallen to. Its a shame that parents, people who are supposed to care and do anything for their children, yet they dont mind seeing one suffer .My heart and prayers go out to the family and this little girl. My daughter has certain nut allergies as well, along with others, seeing what this family is dealing with, makes me fearful for the day when she starts school. This time in her life and her families is supposed to be fun, exciting, the beginning to new adventures, how do others have the right to take that away from them? These people are going to make her hate herself if they keep up in their cruel ways. Parents are supposed to teach their children to be clean anyway right!? What is 30 min out of the day if it means your children are staying clean and healthy as well as caring for another. What are these parents teaching their kids!? God bless the family and little girl and may God have mercy on those causing pain upon this family.

Allergies as severe as this is very concerning. My fear as a parent would be if there was a visitor to the school who doesn't know or misunderstands the peanut free rule. For example, a parent had a peanut butter sandwich before coming to school to be a guest reader in the classroom with this child. She didn't notice that some of the peanut butter got on her sleeve but washed her hands and mouth thoroughly. She goes into the classroom and this child goes into anyphalactic shock. Who is to blame in this situation? If the allergy is this severe then a regular classroom may not be the place for her. You then have to think about foods made in a facility that processes peanuts, may contain traces of peanuts etc. that other children and adults may bring to school and the danger that it poses. I have a child with a peanut allergy and I worry when he is not in my care. His allergy is not as severe as this child's, he just can't eat it. I think that the parents should really think about how easy it would be for things to go horribly wrong in this particular child's situation considering how severe her allergy is. If she was my child, I would find a school that could accommodate her needs or home school.

My oldest son has a peanut allergy. He has to sit at a seperate table during lunch that is peanut free. As upset as I was that he had to be segregated from the other kids. I do feel this is the best option for him. There are other kids who have peanut allergies that sit with him and he can include a friend of his choosing. I think it is very ignorant of parents to dismiss something as severe as a food allergy. This child should not be shunned by her classmates ot their parents b/c of her allergy. What are the parents teaching their kids?? I bet if the shoe were on the other foot, they would feel different. I read a few comments from people saying the parents of the little girl should take her out of school and homeschool her. Don't we all just want out children to live a normal life? With friends, and to feel accepted????? Why should she be secluded from her peers? I guess she should also live in a bubble?? God FORBID students wash their hands?? Oh no!! AND rinse their mouths?? Heavens forbid!! This is ridiculous and gets under my skin. SHAME ON THOSE PARENTS!!!!

Hello??! Extra hand washing is considered a waste a time? Especially when the kids have been touching their mouths and face when eating! This can help protect ALL of the kids from getting sick. The mouth rinsing can also promote oral health as well. Did the parents not take into consideration the potential benefits before rallying to exclude this little girl?
