When a cop pulled over a car for speeding and running red lights on a Seattle street early Sunday morning, he didn't expect to be met with a frantic driver and a passenger about to give birth.

When Officer Anthony Reynolds approached the vehicle, a man jumped out of the car and shouted that his wife was in labor. He was en route to the hospital and still thought he could make it in time. Reynolds quickly called for an ambulance, but it was clear the couple's baby — their fourth child — would arrive before any medics could get to the scene.

"That baby wasn't having any of it and wanted to make an early appearance, so our officers certainly earned their pay today," police spokesperson Sgt. Sean Whitcomb told local NBC station KING 5 News.

Other police officers arrived to help just as the baby girl was born. But that wasn't the end. "After first giving a full-throated cry as she burst into the world, the young girl began struggling to breathe," the Seattle Police Department said on its official blog. "With the help of the child's mother, Officer Reynolds cleared the baby's airway and got her breathing again."

Medics arrived and transported the mother and child to a nearby hospital in stable condition, but not before the proud father could hug and shake the hands of each officer.

According to the police department, the family is doing well and even sent a thank-you note to the officers. The card read: "You have helped deliver a precious gift. We are so grateful."
