Sex Offenders on Halloween

Steering Clear of Sexual Predators on Halloween

Halloween is supposed to be a spooky fun holiday for kids to indulge in freaky activities and gather sugary goodies. The fright night gives parents enough issues to fret about — fire hazards, getting lost, candy and street safety to name a few. I'm also concerned about predators. It's the perfect time for offenders to steal a glance at unsuspecting children.

Some states require registered sex offenders turn off their porch lights and place a sign in the window saying, "No candy or treats at this residence." To trick-or-treat on the safe side, I looked up the homes of registered sex offenders on Family Watchdog. Just type in the zip code where you plan on trick-or-treating and see which houses your family should avoid.

Ours doesn't show place of work for our area. I'm guessing California also doesn't have a law about them not living within a certain range of schools, either. There's like 5 within a block of my husband's school, which makes me very sad.

I like that you can see where they work also, will be avoiding those businesses.

I actually already went on this site,my local news was talking about it the other day, I am so freaked out to know that sex offenders live so close to my house. :SCARED: thanks for posting this. the scary thing is what if people don't visit this website and go to the houses, how are the police going to know that they were participating? :? I really don't know too much about it

Family Watchdog is a reliable site. It's often cited on newscasts. Fortunately we live close to a school and a playground so we have a buffer zone.

In California you can go to http://www.meganslaw.ca.gov/ Its the government listing of the sex offenders I always take my little sisters trick or treating and I may seem totally paranoid but I always stand like 4 steps behind them. Most people in my neighboorhood stand on the sidewalk. I would rather be safe than sorry, is my opinion

It's not a google map website. FamilyWatchdog, from what I've seen, is a highly reputable site.

Has there been any research on this being a legitimate, proven site? A few months ago everyone was making a huge deal about another website that did the same thing, and it turned out to be a complete fake. Although I very much want to keep kids away from offenders, I also don't want innocent people being labeled because some Google map said so.

I keep hearing people say they won't trick or treat because you don't know who you might run into, and I think this site is wonderful to help out with that. I personally am more comfortable with stuff like this and checking before TorTing than I am with going to something like a church/community gathering where anyone can show up.

Thanks for posting this! I just found out there's one about two blocks from my house. Yeah, won't be trick or treating at THAT place.
