On the inside, Clara Beatty is just like all the other kids in her 4th grade class. But on the outside it is apparent that she has Treacher Collins Syndrome, a genetic mutation that causes facial abnormalities and severe hearing and breathing problems.
Clara's parents knew she would have Treacher Collins before she was born, and their doctors questioned their choice to continue with the pregnancy. Clara's mom Janet says that for them, "There was just no question."
Although raising a special needs child has not been easy, the Beattys have discovered that Clara is quite able to cope, sometimes even better than them. When people stare, for instance, Clara just "smiles and says 'hi,'" because that's what her parents have taught her to do.
