Study About Pretty Babies

Do Mamas Love Pretty Babies More Than Others?

They say every mother thinks her newborn is the most beautiful child, but does she treat the lil one that way? A new study by Harvard-affiliated McLean Hospital reveals that moms may love pretty babies more than others. The study placed 27 volunteers in front of computer screens that flashed pictures of 80 babies, some healthy and some with abnormal facial features. The subjects were given the ability to keep a photo on the screen longer than the scheduled four seconds, or remove it early. In the end, both men and women kept the attractive babies on the screen, but "for abnormal babies, women exerted greater effort to shorten the viewing time despite attractiveness ratings comparable to the men."

While there are many reasons the women may have avoided the less attractive babies – feelings of empathy, sensitivity to the images, etc. – the researchers concluded that women are less inclined to gravitate toward a child with physical abnormalities. Is it fair to conclude that a mama would love a beautiful babe more than a less attractive one or is a mother's love truly unconditional?

we were just talking about this on fathers day, My nephew is now almost 5 months old and the only grandchild so far and we were all saying how cute he was how beautifully perfect, and his grandma said something about "I have seen some ugly babies lately" and my other sister in law and I (we are both trying to have kids right now) looked at eachother just appalled as if to say "well I hope my child lives up to your cute-o-meter" god forbid we have "ugly" babies!

Anonymous comments need to go away! Geez! My grandma was angry at my mom for years because right after I was born she told her I was the ugliest thing she'd ever seen ;) I agree this 'study' is really silly and without a point.

B.S. This is more akin to a study on beauty or attraction with symmetry being the prime factor. Mate selection and loving your own child are not the same thing.

Agreed, macneil, with everything you have said! And I have to ask, what is the POINT of this "research"?? (Other than wasting money!)

I was more objective then my husband when it came to our daughter. I could step back and see her INCREDIBLY flat head, lol!, and her really bowed legs. She was a very big baby and squished in the womb. He was toooootally snowed over and thought she was THE cutest thing on the earth. To be honest, she looked like a wrinkly old man when she was born. I think she's really cute now though, not gods gift to the human race, but probably cuter then she actually is.

I agree that a mother's love is unconditional.

Macgirl, I might be the odd one out and this might sound horrible, but I definitely didn't think I had the prettiest baby when he was a newborn. I could objectively say (and my husband agreed) that he was a tad funny looking--bright red, marked up with birth injuries and other birthmarks, a huge head, wrinkly, etc (fairly typical newborn traits). I remember having a conversation about it at the time (and even joking I had birthed a tomato). Of course, we adored him from birth, but we were honestly able to look at him totally objectively. Personally, I think most babies are silly looking in the early days, but like macneil says, I think people are so in love and full of hormones and emotions, that they overlook all that when it comes to their own babies.. :)

Ditto macneil. So true and thankfully everyone thinks their child is the most perfect being in the whole world.

I agree with Macneil and Macgirl . . . this is "bladerdash" there is a long way to go between not wanting to look at a picture of a child you don't know and loving a child (nevermind your own child).

I agree with macneil. And does anyone ever think they have an ugly baby (at the time, anyways)?

But they were not *their* babies! I'm sorry, but this is balderdash. I honestly believed my baby was the most beautiful creature on god's earth, and when I look back 2 years later at her birth/earliest pictures, I just think I was smoking hormones. She is incredibly fat, only one eye is open, for two whole weeks, and she's not a pretty baby. Not only did I adore her in spite of this, I fooled myself into thinking it was true beauty. Of course, *now* she is the loveliest 2 year old on god's earth...
