TIME Cover Shows Mom Breastfeeding Almost 4-Year-Old

TIME Cover Shows Mom Breastfeeding Almost 4-Year-Old

Jamie Lynne Grumet, 26, is pictured on the latest cover of Time Magazine breastfeeding her almost 4-year-old son, in order to promote the attachment parenting method.

Grumet was breastfed by her own mother until the age of six. She told TIME, "You feel comforted, nurtured and really, really loved. I had so much self-confidence as a child, and I know it's from that."

Ms Grumet knows that attachment parenting is perceived as unconventional. She posed for TIME because she believes that the more people see it, the more accepted in will become. She writes on her blog,"Motherhood is hard enough, then to hear constantly how you are caring for your child is 'weird' or makes people 'uncomfortable' is almost too much to handle."

It is moms like this that make it hard for moms of infants that nurse to be accepted in society, something that moms have long battled unfortunately. The article states that its based on, "roots of attachment parenting" and if this mom can only feel attached by having her child suckle from her like a farm animal when clearly this child can use a cup, then someone may need to let her know that you can bond with your toddler by; reading them a book, rocking them while listening to music, sharing a game, doing a puzzle, snuggling, etc. there are so many other ways that mom and children can bond. By the way, mom looks totally into bonding while nursing her son on the chair.

The fact that some women breastfeed til 4 doesn't bother me, but this picture does! I agree that this poor boy will probably be ridiculed for life. Also, mom looks quite "detached" and the little boy somehow looks guilty. Bad choice in photo...

My opinion is... to each, his/her own... I've breastfed my three children. Each were weaned at a different age, but all before they were a year old. Early weaning was mainly because I work. I don't think I could breastfeed past 2 years old, but that's just me. More power to breastfeeding moms. It's the best thing for both mommy & baby.

I nursed two of my children until the age of almost four. I think it is a great thing to do. That being said, there is nothing maternal about the way this woman is nursing in "my" eyes. It was a morning and a night time feeding. If my son all dressed came up to me to nurse I would have given him a glass of water. JUST MY THOUGHTS A mother who firmly believes in nursing.

Breastfeeding is predominately for nutritional development. If the toddler is getting proper nutrition through whole foods he should not "need" to breastfeed. Secondary purpose of breastfeeding is emotional attachment/bonding. Since a child's brain is not developed enough to understand when this needs to change, it is up to the adult (mother) to ween him from the emotional aspect of breastfeeding. I think this mother is being selfish to think it is "helping her son" emotionally at this point. He will forever been seen and known to the world for being on the cover of TIME magazine sucking his mother's nipple. Let's see how that works out for him emotionally....

I nursed both of my children until they were 13 months old. Both weaned themselves. I have to agree that this is a little too long. Maybe 2 years old, but after that, I think that the mother has some emotional issues that she is soothing and probally teaching her child. If they can ask for it by name and have memories, you are not creating a well adjusted child.
