Teacher Suspended After Asking 13-Year-Olds to Write Suicide Notes

A storm is raging in France over the fate of a teacher who asked his 13- and 14-year-old students to write an autobiographical essay explaining how they would justify killing themselves.

Parents and administrators at the collège Antoine-Delafont, the secondary school in Montmoreau-Saint-Cybard where the teacher worked, expressed outrage, which led to the teacher's suspension. But other parents, as well as the local teachers' union, have rallied to defend him, arguing that he is the school's best teacher and that the kids not only love him, but that the assignment was "well-presented."
