Tell Mommy: Did You Talk About Conception?

Gold medal Olympian Kerri Walsh recently revealed that she is expecting her first child with her husband, but she also shared when she scored off the volleyball court. She said, "We believe we conceived our last days in Beijing – so I think a day or two after we won gold medal."

A lot of mamas can talk your ear off about their pregnancies and children, but most stop themselves before going into the details of where and when the deed was done. Like Kerri, not everyone censors the tales and many are perfectly content making public at what point their dreams of family turned into reality.

lilsugar readers were pretty much tied up in deciding whether or not it's PC to talk about trying, so what about talking about conception? Did you share details?

haha...I only did recently because I have a pic of my husband and I at a Valentine's party (in 2007) and a friend asked when it was taken and when I told them I added that it was the weekend Milo was conceived and chuckled. I didn't offer any juicy tid bits so I don't think it's a big deal. I think Kerri's story is cool. :)

a few close friends/family (and all of you random strangers here) know that we were surprised and that i swear it was because i was on some turbo cough syrup...

I don't think there's anything really bad about her comment. I think that's kinda cool. As for me, we were having too much sex at the time and my periods were really irregular so I have no idea when it happened.

I think it's cute to know and share when your baby was conceived especially if it was at a special place or time or if you were trying for a baby for a long time.

We talked about it, but we didn't plot out the date on a calendar or anything.

We tell everyone we know that our son was "made in Italy." It's a simple detail that's nice to share, especially since we're no longer married. I look back on that week in Venice a lot differently knowing that we conceived at that time.

i don't get why there would be any fuss. obviously, you have sex to get pregnant. how puritanical can people be. it's not like she said, "we were on page X in the kama sutra and here are all the details." and, since she was in china for the olympics, it's kind of cool if the baby was conceived over there, during that significant period of time. as for me, i've mentioned it to family and friends in passing b/c we were newly married and not trying to get pregnant. we were out of town without protection. my famous last words were "oh, don't worry. we'll be fine."

Not to the general public, but my friends and family know because it was so shocking to us. I think Kerri Walsh's comment is fine.

i talked about it with people who asked. it wasn't a special place or time like just after winning gold medals so it was not really conversation worthy.

why is early november/late october such a popular birthday time? because valentine's day (and the weekends surrounding it) are a gestation period away. our conception date was pretty obvious to most of our family.

I knew and told someone because it we were on vacation in their city. They got a kick out of it. But other than that - who cares.

We actually have video of our conception, just kidding. I think maybe I did talk about it a little only because I was surprised. We had tried really hard the month before with no results so I had purchased the ovulation detection strips and we were saving the sex until the strip said go- it never did. I think we only did it once. I think there are also some mom's that struggled to conceive and are kind enough to share their info which is often helpful and reassuring to other struggling women.

We still don't know exactally when we conceived. There's a 3 week period that is in the unknown. So it never really gets brought up. Would I if I knew? To those close to me sure but not to people I don't know on a personal level.
