Tricks My Mama Taught Me: No School, No Fun

Kids are notorious for bluffing an illness to get out of school, but moms have a few tricks up their sleeves for knowing when our tots should stay home from school. For those times when it's too close to call, having a few guidelines for sick days will keep your tot in check.

When I was a kid, most of my friend's moms had a rule: If they stayed home from school due to illness, there was no playing allowed. They were able to watch TV for a little while, but a sick day mostly consisted of fluids, meds, and rest — no fun for a wee one faking an ailment. If you're having a hard time deciphering if your daughter's stomachache is because of a test or the bug that's been going around, chances are she'll make the decision for you. If she's feeling fine and knows that it's not going to be a free day of play, she'll head to school. If she's feeling under the weather, she'll be compliant to relax on the couch.

My mom used to let my brother and I stay home from school anytime we wanted to long as we didn't take more absent days than we were allowed for the year. At the time I thought it was great, but later I wished she had taught us to take school more seriously. My kids will only stay home when they're actually sick.

When I was a kid, my brother always faked sick to try to get out of school. Naturally, my parents only thought I was a pretty cool kid when I wasn't sick. So if I felt like crap, I was a liar. One year, I kept falling asleep in the car on the way to school, in the bathroom, and my dad would be like stop acting like you're sick...so I never told my parents I was sleeping, and I said that I was just playing or something. Two weeks later, it wasn't getting better, and I went to the doctor. My mom was like "God help you if nothing is wrong..." and I had mono. That was fun. My parents learned to just shut their mouth after that. But, since that incident, the weren't too bad. But a stomach ache wasn't enough to get out of school. What did get me out of school was either strep throat or a sinus infection with accompanying fever, which I only had once when I was in HS, and was out for a week for strep. My sinus infection got me no days, since it happened on vacation time. I wasn't a bitchy kid who put a thermometer on a lightbulb or something. I was nice, my parents got real lucky with me =P

I don't do "torture for wee ones" on sick days, I don't want them to be scared to tell me they're sick. They're not allowed to have a normal schedule, but if they feel sick and what comforts them is hanging on the couch and watching tv, I'm fine with that. They just have to meet standards to be home sick. "My tummy hurts" doesn't cut it.

I had to stay in bed. If only I could feign illness to stay in bed all day now.

I've told my daughter there will be no TV and she will have to stay in bed. She has only been out sick once. :D
