Using Holidays as a Threat to Kids

Do You Hold the Holidays Over Your Kids? Chime In!

It really is the most wonderful time of the year! There are deals to be snapped up at our favorite stores, delicious scents filling our homes, and tots on their best behavior hoping to be richly rewarded for their actions.

With stashes of gifts hidden for later distribution, many mamas are finding themselves in an unusual place of power. Over the past few weeks — I'm not proud to say — I've caught myself reminding my kids that inappropriate behavior will result in a night of Hanukkah gifts going to needier children than themselves. It only takes a few seconds for them to begin keeping their hands to themselves! Do you use the holidays as a threat?

I call it a teaching tool. For the past, maybe 4 years, when my girls get too aggressive and hyped up I say, "if this continues you WILL lose a Christmas gift". I'm more concerned with long term character than short term satisfaction. One year there were a few gifts that went to the poor children. Now, a gentle reminder is all it takes. It has o be pretty bad for me to pull that one.
