Weight-Loss Surgery For Obese Children

2-Year-Old Has Weight-Loss Surgery

Childhood obesity is a growing problem, but concerned parents may be scratching their heads about how far some parents go to help a child lose weight after a 2-year-old boy in Saudi Arabia underwent weight-loss surgery. The boy, who had a body mass index of 44.1 before surgery and weighed about 72 pounds, has become the world’s youngest weight-loss surgery patient. But were the health risks to get him to about 52 pounds and a body mass index of 24 worth it?

To find out what other steps the parents took to help their son lose weight, read the whole story on theStir.

I don't like to comment on stories when I don't know all the facts, but this story bothers me immensely. Shame on the parents!!! This is a good example of parent negligence and abuse. A child doesn't get this big by their own doing. Shame on the doctor that agreed to do such an invasive surgery on a toddler!! The doctor should have gotten a nutritionist or perhaps social services involved. Unless this child has some rare disease that causes extreme weight gain, this is inexcusable. I don't believe that's the case though considering the doctor did perform weight loss surgery. Ridiculous!!

How about setting an exampe? Teaching them good eating habits? Encouraging being active? Dont get me wrong Im guilty of buying my kid McD's occasionally... and Ive got a few lbs to lose but this is beyond acceptable. Parents with children like this should all be required to have a Family personal trainer
