What Do You Know About Baby Poop?

New parents become obsessed with their infant's bowel movements (or if we're being polite "BM"). They talk about color, consistency, how often it happens and what makes it happen.

It's not an exact science, but doctors do study what color and frequency changes might mean and take it beyond the usual "bathroom" talk. When should you become worried? WebMD warns:

Don't be frightened by the color changes of BMs. In normal infants, BMs change color as the baby's diet changes, as the digestive tract matures, and as it is populated by new, normal bacteria. It's rare that color changes signal a digestive problem. Usually color changes just mean that there is more or less of the yellow/green/brown/orange pigments that are picked up along the way.

Oh, baby poop! This quiz made me laugh. I remember, in the first few days after Jack was born, constantly obsessing about whether this poop had turned that magical mustardy seedy texture that would indicate that I was doing something right when it came to breastfeeding. I analyzed each diaper so very neurotically, LOL! When Day 5 came, and it was still "transitional poop," I cried. When Day 6 came, and finally it was the "right" consistency, I was so proud, you'd think that Jack had said his first word or something. I hope I'm more relaxed the next time around!

#4 is a little confusing--it may be true, but it is still cause for concern.

I've changed quite a few dirty diapers... :) But the lil guy I babysit now must have a BM schedule b/c I haven't changed a dirty diaper from him since before Christmas. I watch him in the afternoon from 2-6:30ish. His mom told me he has them in the AM and I guess he must have the other ones after me. I always let her know that he never does poop. So if she isn't concerned I guess I won't be :) Although he has just started on solids so this may change! lol
