When Grandparents Outnumber Children

Are the people around you having fewer babies? According to the latest U.S. Census, children now make up a smaller percentage of the American population than ever before, and the number will continue to slip.

Back in 1900, children made up nearly 40% of the population, and seniors 65 and older were a mere 5%. Today, the share of children is down to 24% and projected to drop to 23% by 2050. At the same time, the share of seniors will likely increase from 13% to about 20% due to aging baby boomers.

Noting that more public resources are being directed at the aging population, children's advocate William P. O'Hare wonders "whether today's children will have the resources they need to help care for America's growing elderly population."
