Would You Pay Out of Pocket for a 4D Ultrasound?

Ultrasounds used to be an exciting part of a woman's prenatal visits, something that occurred once or twice throughout her pregnancy. Today, many moms-to-be are electing to have 3D and 4D ultrasounds that allow them to clearly see and walk away with photos and videos of their unborn child's features.

These 3D and 4D sonograms are often done in luxury suites with plasma video screens, comfortable seating for your family and friends, and piped in lullabies. The biggest issue is that insurance does not cover the cost of these nonessential procedures, which can range from $150 for a basic package to more than $300 for packages that include DVDs, password-protected websites, and more.

Would you be willing to pay out of pocket for a sneak peek of your child?

I, personally, would get this done. I was born with a unilateral cleft lip and would like to prepare myself incase my child was going to have one. I think it would make the blow easier to take knowing a few months ahead then wishing for a "perfect" baby and finding out after delivery that it had a birth defect.

I did it with my 3rd and final pregnancy. It was $250 but it was a birthday present from my parents. My husband thought it was kind of creepy but I thought it was amazing and loved every second.

I did it twice in during my one pregnancy, it was completely worth it, however it was also alot cheaper here. We only paid like fifty bucks.

I would pay 150 just to see what he/she would look like

I guess I'd pay for it, but only for the last one, where the baby is almost fully developed. Other than that, I'm okay with the basic ultrasound pic for all the other apts.

Yes I want it! I would be so excited... I'm the type of person who want Christmas in July, not wait for December!

I would if I were concerned about health problems it could help detect, otherwise probably not. I think the 3D photos look kind of freaky and I'm ok waiting to have the baby to see his/her face.

If it cost less money I would do it. I'm curious to know what he will look like, but not $300 curious.

I would! I've been trying to get pregnant for 2 years now, I think I would do anything for my baby..

I don't think I'd want a DVD of it, but if it helped detect possible problems, etc., I would get it. Other than that, I'd wait for the special day!!

Yes, I think I would. I would not pay hundreds of dollars though. $150 would probably be my top price. Luckily my doctor's office got one of these machines and I had one done when my baby measured smaller around 26 weeks. It was very cool to see such detail, and no, you can't see the sex of the child unless they actually show that area in the photo. They mostly focus on the upper body/ face. I think the 4th dimension is time (the live part), when you are watching the video.

I did! it was my 1st baby and it's just for fun. The 2-d quality is crap & this was so much better . I wasnt feeling much kicking so it was fun to see her dancing, sucking her thumb, position of sleep etc all the boring stuff only 1st time moms can understand! I only got the basic package tho-$150,its cheaper on a weekday too.... wouldnt pay any more than that!

They offer 3D for free (or insurance-covered at least, not out of pocket) with the regular ultrasound at my doctor's office but I didn't want it. I didn't even have an ultrasound with my second since there was no medical reason for it.

Coool....I don't have any kids and have never been pregnant...but I would do this for sure if and when I am. I know its kind of cheating and seeing the baby before it comes out..but its fun! I don't think $250 is that much money..tho I'm not sure it would be that much here in Canada (our health care is free). I'm sure it wouldn't be free because its not "necessary", but I doubt it would be that much. I think its a great idea for those who want a sneak peak :)

I was really lucky - one of the companies that develops these is based where I live. They were testing out a new one and we got ours for free for letting them use the images in their promo literature. It was great!

nope i am fine with regular. the fun is seeing your baby for the first time at delivery. if it were normal than fine but I dont see paying so much for something that last a few months before they are hear everyday. i spent the extra money on my phil and ted

No, I am not sure I would. I actually had these done at my 12 week ultrasound (I was sent to a high-risk specialist) and he did these as part of the normal visit and screening. While it was nice to see everything was great, it was a bit creepy, especially at such an early stage. Other than confirming the sex later on if I were unconvinced, I don't think I would pay out of pocket for them. If my regular Dr. happened to do it, great, but otherwise, I'd likely pass.

Yes. I had a regular 2D ultrasound today at 36 weeks and it was such crap quality. It's really hard to figure out what is what or that it's even a baby I'm looking at.

Not for me--these pics kind of creep me out for some reason. I can see why people would go for it though. Especially all those parents with the amazing baby scrapbooks.
