Yoga in School

Baby Wellness: Yoga as Part of the Curriculum

Physical education is part of every school's curriculum though some are putting a new twist on the old subject. Climbing a knotted rope hanging from the gym ceiling is so passé. Having seen the benefits of meditation, relaxing and stretching, Fernback Elementary School in Atlanta is making yoga part of their students' daily routine.

Since the practice was adapted to the teacher's lesson plans nearly two years ago, test scores and test taking skills have improved at the school. And, the kids are loving it too.

Would you campaign for yoga classes at your child's school?

My husband is a music/band/choir teacher - and he says when they do breathing exercises they have a better day... it focuses them. This yoga is a really good idea for widespread use!

I think it's great, but I think it might not be just the yoga that's helping the kids - having motivated teachers that incorporate things they love into their classes so they're not just going through the motions probably helps the kids a lot! I think that's a component in art and music being part of kid's enhanced learning sometimes too - if the teacher has a passion for it and enjoys themselves while teaching, I think the kids reap the benefits all over the place.
