The first Democratic debate took place Tuesday and a total of five candidates faced off on numerous topics. But let's be honest — all eyes were on Hillary Clinton and Senator Bernie Sanders. At first, things got a little tense.

Hillary Clinton laid out her platform firmly and powerfully.
She focused on "bringing our country together again."

Bernie Sanders faced off with Clinton on capitalism.
"We have to make sure every family in this country gets a fair shake," said Sanders.

Clinton promised she knows how to get sh*t done.
“I'm a progressive. But I'm a progressive who likes to get things done," said Clinton.

When it came to gun control, Clinton is not impressed with Bernie.
After Sanders revealed he wouldn't crack down on gun shop owners, Clinton reacted: "This has gone on too long and it's time the entire country stood up against the NRA."

The debate was a constant showdown between Sanders and Clinton.
Still, the two did agree on several important topics like equal pay and family leave. Clinton got particularly strong on family leave: "We need to join the rest of the advanced world in having it." Sanders gave an equally strong statement: "That is an international embarrassment that we do not provide family — paid family and medical leave," said Sanders.

Except when it comes to Clinton's email scandal.
“Enough of the emails — let's talk about the real issues facing America," said Sanders.

That broke the tension.

When it came to Wall Street policies, Sanders was clear.
"That's not true," said Sanders when asked if Clinton's policies were tougher than his.

Sanders didn't waver on weed.
Sanders said he would vote yes, while other candidates, like Clinton, were not clear or decided on their position.

Unfortunately, the lesser-known candidates didn't shine.
Lincoln Chafee, the former governor of Rhode Island, did not particularly resonate with the audience.
