Over the past several months, both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump have addressed the many killings of black men, often at the hands of police. In July, President Obama also discussed the matter in a speech that followed the shootings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile. While politicians confront these tragedies, so do every day people — including a New York City subway rider who opened up to a packed train about Luke Cage and its impact on the perception of black men in the United States.

In a video shared by the commuter himself, Crispin Booker, a man walks through the train and asks passengers to express their stories of success and gratitude. "Share your accomplishments because nobody else will," he said. That's when Booker praised Luke Cage, Netflix's well-received Marvel series about a black superhero with unbreakable skin. He said, "Just about a month ago, I'd be considered a scary guy with a hoodie — black, big — but just a month ago on Netflix, Luke Cage made it cool." Booker's confident statement was met with applause and cheers from fellow commuters.

He also celebrated himself by saying, "I'm happy to tell you guys I'm turning 30 in December. I'm young, I'm black, and I'm beautiful . . . sexy, too!" Booker finished his impromptu speech by announcing he currently works for a hedge fun and is donating computers to students in Grenada.
