Everything We Know About the Fatal Attack on the Berlin Christmas Market

A truck ran into a crowded Christmas market in Berlin on Monday night, killing 12 and injuring dozens, according to German police. Details are still emerging, but here's what we know so far.

The attack

The incident took place at a major public square called Breitscheidplatz as people gathered to shop for Christmas. Reports said the truck jumped over the sidewalk around wooden stands set up at the market and the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, according to the New York Times. Berlin police confirmed nine dead and 50 injured, and that they were investigating it as an act of terrorism, reports CNN.

The suspect

Police said they arrested a man near the market, but did not confirm he was the driver. They said a passenger was found dead in the cab of the truck and are urging residents to stay home.

Similarities to Nice

This attacks bears resemblance to the attack in Nice, France in July when a man plowed into a crowd celebrating Bastille Day and killed 84 people.
