Car Window Up or Down With a Dog in the Car

Pet Community: Car Window Up or Down With Your Pup in the Car?

Everyone wants to keep their pups safe, and PetSugar member OhMaxine recently asked a great question: do you ever drive around with the window down for your dog? Here's what she says:

How do you feel about rolling down the window with your dog in the car? I rarely ever do it, and when I do it's only in my neighborhood with the window rolled down half way. I'm so worried Maxine will jump out... even though she probably can't even fit through the little space I give her. When my mom was sixteen her small dog jumped out of the window and was run over. I just couldn't imagine how terrible I would feel if something were to happen to Max while in my car. Has anyone ever had their dog jump out?

I roll my window down about an inch, two at the most. It's just enough so they can stick their noses out. I have to clean a lot of doggy snot and drool off my windows, but they stay out of trouble that way.

we have car seats (the brand is outward hound) in both of our cars for our small dog. He gets very nervous to ride in the car unless he's in his car seat. It clips onto his harness and he can sit up and look around or lay down and sleep safely. It's pretty unsafe if you get into an accident and your dog is unrestrained. My dog can't handle the window down, he gets too excited.

I keep the windows up while driving and then put them down whenever I'm at a stop light or something so Obi can take a sniff.

I had no idea there are dog-seat belts... I'm going to look into those because Maxine goes most places with me, and in a Mini Cooper she is very close to the dashboard.

We keep them up and for a very good reason--Zena gets overwhelmed with the sights, smells and sounds when she's in the car when the windows up! She's also seat-belted as well.

My dogs wear seat-belts, so I open up the windows for them. They can not put their heads out the window.

I think it is okay, if you are around town and definitely don't open it enough so they can jump out! On the freeway it def. makes me super nervous!
