Did You Have Class Pets As a Kid?

It's time to think back to your elementary school days – did you ever have a creature in class? My friend's school had an "office dog" that belonged to the principal . . . and I know if, I went there, I would have been trying to find excuses to go to the office! Remember that plotline from several sitcoms in years' past, child would take "pet" home, pet would meet its untimely end, and the frantic search for the replacement would begin. From official school pets to animals visiting with their owners, was this the case with you? As always if you remember the exact type – and name – of a school pet, don't forget to share in your comments below.

Guinea pig, hermit crab. My brother was with a total animal-loving classroom where they had parrots, guinea pigs , rabbits (who bred) and a lot of other throughout the year - the teacher had tons. She kept winning animal-rights awards, too, and she was very careful with how the pets were handled.

When I was in sixth grade we had an aquarium with two newts. Nelly and Gingrich (hehe). In 7th grade we had a Chinchilla and an iguana. The iguana was really mean though! He would always try to wack people with his tail whenever you tried to feed him.

My mom's a kindergarten teacher and has been breeding guinea pigs in her class for as long as I can remember. There've been so many generations to go through that classroom!

A white bunny named Snowball in 4th grade and they let people take turns taking him home (POOR THING!)... we took it home and it had diarrhea issues... everywhere (i'm sure from the stress)! My parents were not all that happy, but I was so excited to bring him home...

In elementary school we had Hamsters and the school had an actual Panther that we adopted at the LA Zoo. Middle school we had some many rabbits it wasn't funny. And unofficially our school mascot was not the Explorer Cabrillo but all the freakin' evil Seagulls that swarmed us all at lunch. Everyone, every single student at Cabrillo Middle School was sure to be crapped on by our horrible unofficial school mascots at least twice a week. High School mascot was a English Bulldog and yup we had a Bulldog. But because of the science and biology departments the school was infested with darn near every animal students could think of.

Yes, in kindergarten we had an aquarium of tadpoles that turned into frogs (very cool!). And, we had a snake but after he/she escaped the teacher wouldn't let us keep it in the classroom anymore.

Rabbits in Kindergarten and hamsters in other grades. I was always afraid of the hamsters, and when I finally got the courage to pet the thing it bit me!

In our high school biology class, we had a unit on insects where our teacher brought in all kinds of bugs. It was my nightmare and I told her I have to leave the room for awhile.

In 5th grade we had a hamster. During circle time we would put it in a hamster ball and he would roll around the room. Classroom chores included feeding the hamster and cleaning the cage. I loved it so much I convinced my parents to let me get one. I was so sad when it died, 3 yrs is too short for me :( In my middle school science class, we had 2 "lab rats". Our (weird) teacher would tape yardsticks to our tables, and the rats would run back and forth. It was pretty cool except when they'd pee and poop near your homework.

Kindergarten: snails and a worm (Inchy) Second grade: butterflies Third grade: hatching chicks Fifth grade: a rabbit (its name was Hoppy or Fluff or something along those creative lines) Ninth grade: mice, sort of, in bio...technically they were food for the snake, but they were too cute

In fifth grade we had a class rat. He was really fat and his name was Whiskers, I think. He was pretty cool. Unfortunately, he died mid-school year, but the teacher replaced him with 2 smaller rats.

We had to many pets! I've had birds, mice, fish, and even a turtle. The bird's name was Mel. The mice were Scratchy and Gizmo. The fish didn't have names. The turtle was Fred. We had them in different grads and classes, but it was fun! I really liked have them in the class room.

One year, we had a saltwater tank with a bunch of fish and crabs. It was pretty cool. Another year, we had a gerbil or two.

Yes, and they were mistreated and mishandled by my classmates. Pets belong in responsible homes, not in classrooms full of insensitive children.

We had a couple birds that were soooo noisy. I think our teacher must have regretted that move.
