Do Tell: Did You Agree With Use of Snarl Bands?

Of course I tuned in to Greatest American Dog yesterday and, wow, it was a night of surprises! First off, I loved the first challenge where owners had to predict if their pets would take or leave a variety of temptations from sticks to steak – I know North would have been all over that one! Then, for the main competition, each duo drew an expression out of a hat – they had to somehow get their top models to strike a pose and depict that emotion. Teresa had some difficulty making Leroy show "angry" so she used an unconventional method to force his snarly face.

Although she was not eliminated, I don't think this strategy sat well with the other contestants . . . or the judges. Tell me what you think in your comments below.

So against the snarl band!!! However, Teresa actually did get "anger" out of Leroy with the blow dryer and was of course bitten in the process (which happens when I dog is angered) and then went on to call him a "bastard"...I felt extremely sorry for her dog. Apparently when Leory gave her what she wanted, she berated the poor dearly. shame!!!

that's so mean! I don't get what a snarl band is, but I can see the dog hates it. :( The grapefruit water also... again, how would she like that in the eye? Poor dog.

The moment the poor dog went to her for comfort after being sprayed repeatedly with water mixed with grapefruit juice (in the face and eyes!) and she pushed her away saying "I'm not your mother right now" was heartbreaking! She is much too hard on the poor dog and they never show her giving Leroy affection. The poor thing was abused for two days just to get an "angry" photo. Awful! No wonder it bit her. The snarl bands were very upsetting to the dog, but better than the spraying with grapefruit juice and whatever she was pointing at Leroy when he bit her (a vacuum?). I understand that angry is a tough word (and I think irresponsible for the show to have used), but couldn't she have come up with something more creative than abusing her puppy? When my dog is angry with me (usually due to teeth brushing or nail clipping), he turns his back on me and won't look at me (only for a few seconds until I tell him he is beautiful and we make up). Maybe she could have done something like that? Or gotten Leroy to snarl by playing tug? There had to be something better for the dog!

Everything she did was mean/abusive. She should have been sent home without her dog.

I don't think the snarl bands were as harmful as the water and grapefruit juice to the face was.

OMG that's awful. Did you see that poor dog trying to crawl on her lap after she sprayed it in the face!? Poor puppy....

What the heck is a snarl band? And why would they want someone to make their dog look angry? I also think it was mean to spray the dog with water. Once in a while I will resort to spraying my dog with a water bottle to break a particularly bad habit (i.e. jumping on the new couch repeatedly), but I'd never spray it directly in her face. And when I do spray her I feel so guilty because she gets this betrayed look on her face. Why would I want to do that just to win some stupid contest?

Maybe I don't understand what exactly a snarl band is, but to me it doesn't really look like a horrible, abusive thing to do. Uncomfortable, maybe. But I wouldn't call that abuse.

carak has a good point too angry is a really hard word something people never show their dogs we teach our dogs to convey good things snarling is always frowned upon

the girl that uses the bands is so mean to her dog it breaks my heart i never see her showing him love only distaste what do i think of the snarl bands? this may sound weird but i think they're disrespectful and mean but they don't look painful

Runnergeek, I agree about not tuning in again. It's kind of like the old saying, "When someone SHOWS you who they are, believe them."

first off asking her to do 'angry' was out of line. i've never heard of snarl bands, but i think it was a situation where they had no other choice. granted she could have taken the stance that she could not make her dog look angry (who wants to see that anyway?), but what else was she supposed to do to convey angry? yell at him & hit him? that's the only way i know how to make a dog angry. i think that she just didn't want to get kicked off by not conveying the word she got and that's why she did it.

I agree with fuzzles that the show should not have asked her to make her dog look angry. I don't really know what snarl bands are, but it was not a good situation overall and the dog did look uncomfortable.

I couldn't stand that girl in this episode, I hate how she treats her dog. Like she's being mean to hit to get him to snarl and when he snaps at her she freaked out. uhm that's what you were trying to get out of him! He did seem to hate the snarl bands, but I've seen dogs (like in shows) that they don't bother them at all. Sometimes I'll rub my finger on B-Bops gums (so they're dry) and his lip will stick to his gums like a snarl. It's funny but it only lasts a second because he licks it and fixes it.

What are snarl bands? Are they like rubber bands that fit over the teeth? I did teach my sweet golden retriever to bare his teeth, but I did it by playing with him. As soon as I said ok, he dropped the snarl and was back to normal.

That's awful! I can't believe she would do that to her own dog -- not to mention that they show let that happen.

I was irritated that she wasn't the one eliminated, while the contestant who was eliminated didn't have a great picture, he at least got the shot with out abusing his dog. I can not imagine doing that to my dog, and it wasn't just the use of the bands, she was actually mean to her dog while trying to get the shot! Unacceptable in my opinion!

That poor dog! I don't watch the show, but I think ANY dog would hate having those snarl-bands used on its face. I agree with fuzzles; dogs aren't actors and they can't show an emotion unless they are actually feeling it. Forcing a dog to make a certain type of face is just plain cruelty in my opinion.

I was pissed off that the show would even ASK that the dog be angered. Dogs aren't actors; any anger displayed is REAL. I was also upset that the photographer, ultimately in control of what was happening, did not put a stop to it or refuse to continue with the shoot.

that's ridiculous. what is wrong with this show? i agree it does seem abusive. i will not be watching anymore.

i've never heard of snarl bands before, but using them seems way out of line! the dog seemed really upset about it. :(

Wow, that's horrible... I don't watch the show so I don't know the details, but if someone tried to do that to a dog around me or my dog I would flip out
