Does Your Pet Have A Favorite Color?

Do Your Pets Have a Favorite Color?

A friend from Southern California sent me this email the other day about how her lab Jake seems to prefer one color over the others:

"My dog Jake loves playing fetch with tennis balls – he could fetch those things all day and not get tired! My local sports store carries different colored tennis balls, and I just naturally picked the blue ones since Jake is a boy. I buy replacements in the same color, until last week when they were out of stock and I was forced to buy the regular bright green ones. Once I got them home and tossed the ball out in the yard, Jake would not fetch! Time after time, he wouldn't fetch that bright green ball. So to test, I picked up an old tore up blue one and Jake took off after it! Have you ever heard of a dog having a favorite color toy?"

Although research suggests that pups have similar vision to humans with red/green color blindness which may determine why Jake only fetches the blue tennis balls, the story was so cute, I thought I would ask you all the same question: Does your pet seem to prefer one color over the rest?

This is interesting...I really think it's possible. My little Peanut just prefers his bear over his monkey...and other toys. ...I always thought dogs were like newborn babies. Red, Black, etc were more prominent. Now I know my dog can actually see my blue jeans! lol! Thanks to all who posted...

shalee55--Dogs aren't colorblind. They see like bulls. They can see colors, just in a different way than we do. Humans see the rainbow of colors and all their variations (aka VIBGYOR), dogs can see in"VIBYYYR" (violet indigo, blue, yellow, yellow, yellow, red). That being said, they see things through a little yellower than we do. Here's the source->http://www.puplife.com/Shop/Control/fp/SFV/32255/view_page/How-Dogs-See-Color

I have noticed that Polka prefers red toys! ;) If I show her the same toy in different colors, and with a red one, she'll choose the red everytime!!! :)

My dog likes any toy with a squeaker in it. But, if the toy happens to be Rabbit Brown, she's bound to destroy it in 3 days because she loves it so much

Raider just likes toys, especially the stuffies with squeakies inside.

Stifler likes pink. He's always playing with the pink toys, lol. Chloe doesn't care, if Stifler has it, she wants it. Lol.

Oh, yes. My Bonnie doesn't seem to care, but Clyde only loves his purple ball. He chases it around the house, carries it in his mouth, and absolutely ignores every other color of dingle ball that we have.

It could have been that the dog was having a hard time seeing the bright-yellow green tennis balls in the grass. I know that my dogs can't see them once they stop moving but can find darker shaded balls that contrast to the grass better.
