Has Your Pet Ever Gotten Lost?

Although my dad likes to jokingly say, "if anyone took North, they'd bring him back," based on my hyper pooch's antics, I can't imagine what I would do if my beloved pet got away from me. It makes me sad when I see signs like this in windows or on street posts, and I always wonder if the furry family ever makes it home again? Have you ever lost a pet . . . and did you ever get it back?

We lost one cat for three days, she came back. A few months later, her brother went missing. Three and a half years later, we found him. He was the shelter pet at our local SPCA, he was such a friendly, lovable, special cat that when he came in, they didn't want to give him up for adoption, they kept him there.

We lost two cats over the years but they were both outside cats and both relatively old so it's possible that they went off into the woods and died as I've been told cats will do.

When I was in high school, we had a tortoise named Strider and when it was nice out we let him live outside because it must suck to be able to walk and be stuck in a fish tank all day... well, he was about 4 inches tall and 6 inches long and he lived in a brick pen we made with walls that were about a foot high of bricks and some of that wire garden fencing on the outside too. Well one day we came home and Strider was nowhere to be found, and so we scoured the garden and the neighbor's garden for hours and hours and days and days until we just decided he was gone. Then, two weeks later, my mom was driving me and my brother back from school and we saw this huge rock-looking thing a block away and across the street, and so we pulled over and it was Strider!! I don't know how he managed to do it, that one...

I had two Akitas growing up and while my parents were away one of them ran away from our friend's house and we never found her :(. My dog is microchipped and has a million tags on. I just get worried because he's a pit bull and even though he is THE most friendly dog, I'm afraid people will not want to rescue him. Whenever he gets excited about meeting someone new, he crinkles his lip which would looks scary to someone who doesn't know him. I'm hoping that the fancy coach collar and serious tail wagging would help him out if he is ever in a time of need!

My Chihuahua used to get out all the time. It was awful. My dog now wouldn't run away on purpose like my wandering Chihuahua, but I'm terrified of her being stolen. She is a Boston Terrier but a lot of people think she is a pit bull puppy. In my old neighborhood there was a rash of pit bull thefts and someone broke into house to steal a Boston and another person was held up at gun point for their pit puppy. I think they were being stolen for illegal dog fighting. We moved to a safer town for just that reason.

When I was 12 we went camping and my dad insisted we bring my cat, Tiger, and let him roam the camp grounds at night. The first morning after he came back, but that night we had a huge rainstorm, and the next day he didn't come back. I sprinkled cat food all around our tent, but we never found him. I had my mom call the campgound so many times, but he was never found

I can't imagine what I would do if my dog ever ran away or was dognapped. I would probably go into a severe depression. Fortunately, I live in a secure apartment building with other responsible dog-woning tenants.

Both. Me and my husbands dog Raja escaped a couple months ago and after 2 horrible hours I finally found her running out of the woods 1/4 mile from our house. When I was younger though I had a very sweet and smart Cockatail bird fly out the door on accident and an adorable kitty run away and never return :(

I have a cat that lives with my parents. I've had her since I was in 7th grade. We like to let her sit out back on the screened in porch but many years ago when another cat got in our backyard she ran through the screen to chase it off (she came right back when mom called her). But we never properly fixed the screen. Two years ago she was out there and apparently my parents forgot to let her back in. So she went out around the house to get attention - no go. So for a whole day she was missing - out someplace in the neighborhood. My father found her out looking for him.

Microchipping is a great tool but not a guarantee. My sweet little papillon was microchipped and we are pretty sure he was dognapped. We haven't seen our little guy in over a year.

It's definitely true to keep your black cats inside during halloween! it's SO stupid but there are crazy people out there and you never know! keep them safe!

Renee how sad!!!!!!!!! :( I'm so glad Jelly was eventually, ok, though. We always keep our black cat inside around Halloween because I have heard stories like this before.

My Brittany Spaniel was dog napped once. Two people stole him out of our yard and were trying to sell him near a bus stop. A man noticed, confronted them and knew that the dog didn't belong to those men. So he got our dog, and began calling the local animal shelters and animal hospitals which we had already called reporting Rory missing. So in an amazing turn of events we got our dog back, thanks to a good Samaritan.

I totally forgot but my boyfriends dog that lived at his parents house recently got out of their backyard and got lost. She was old and had like doggy alzheimers (there's a real name for it but I forget). They think she got out then got confused and lost. When brendans dad figured out she was gone and went looking for her, he found her by the side of the road. They don't know if she got hit or if she had like a heart attack or something but she was gone by the time he got there. It was so sad. This post is making me really sad :-(

I've never lost B-Bop thank god, he's microchipped and has tags just in case. When I was little I had a black cat named Jelly (she died 2 years ago at the age of 22) that disappeared once. I was little and my mom told me that she had just gotten lost. Turns out in reality some neighborhood boys had found her and decided she was bad luck (black cat around Halloween time) and beat her with a bat. God I want to cry just thinking about it. My mom found her a couple days later, she'd managed to get back to our garage and found a little hole I'm sure she thought she'd die in. My mom took her to the vet and though she had some broken bones, she survived! Poor Jelly. That's the only time we've "lost" a pet. sad

My dog is microchipped and he always has a collar with tags on because we're worried that he could run away. He's still kind of unpredictable at times (though he's getting better!), and I could easily see him making a mad dash to freedom one of us left a door open for even a split second. He is fast as crap; there's no way either of us could catch him. Luckily he hasn't tried this yet.

Oh Katydid that's so sad :( I'm sorry... I thought my first cat ran away when I was 7 years old. I was upset about it for YEARS. When I was in my early 20's, I was visting with an older family friend who had been our housekeeper when I was little, and she said something about "the day your grandfather came and took that cat away." It turns out my parents and grandparents thought the cat was mean and wanted to get rid of him before my baby brother was born. My parents claim they don't know what my grandfather did with my kitty. He was not a nice man though, so I shudder to think. I am still sad about it!

When I was little we had a small poodle named Fifi. She was such a great dog. As she got older she was blind and deaf. She somehow managed to get out of the house and we couldn't find her. We searched our neighborhood for days and put fliers up. We never found her. I just pray that someone found her wondering the neighborhood and took her in and took good care of her. Its been about 25 years and still when I think about her it breaks my heart and makes me cry.

I would probably have to be hospitalized if my dog went missing. He is chipped, has all info on his collar, everything I can do to make him "findable" if it ever came down to it. Although, I suspect if he got out, he might not get returned, because he is a solid white purebred Chihuahua, and he's just adorable. Someone would totally steal him. And as loving and loyal to me as I would like to think he is, he would probably befriend anyone who offered him good snacks! Lol.

Yes- my dog ran after a deer in the yard one morning and she was gone for 4 days. They ended up finding her one town over! Her collar fell off too, so they didn't even know where she belonged. By a stroke of luck, someone called the pound who I had called the day before and they contacted me. I really didn't think I would ever see her again! Thank God ;)

I've never lost a pet, but I have seen a lot of signs for people who lost pets. The saddest one was one I saw a couple of months ago. Someone lost their pet, and they had signs up all over the city. I know that they really wanted their dog back. I hope they got it. They never took them down, so I don't know if they ever did.

one time when at a girlfriend's house I opened the door half a foot and a dog she was sitting tore out of the house. I chased him all over the neighborhood in my work clothes (skirt hiked up so I could run faster). the saving grace was two dogs in a fenced in back yard starting barking at the run away, so the run away went to sniff them through the gate which was when I caught him. uuuug the thought of losing a pet makes me nauseated ):
