How Often Do You Clean the Litterbox?

Whether you're a one-cat gal or a more felines, more fun type, I'm curious how often you change the kitties' box. For this poll, I don't mean how often you scoop the poop, but how frequently you replace all the litter. I've heard different answers from friends with the same number of cats, so now I want to hear it from you.

Danica will let me know when she wants it changed. If I do it too early she will make a mess out of it and if I do it too late she will whine until I get on it. So, she has trained me with one of her sounds. I have picked up the sound she makes when she wants her litter change. This way she is a happy kitty, I don't have to do it everyday, and she thinks she runs the household.....well. LOL

With 8 cats and 4 litterboxes (two inside, two outside) scooping is a must every day. However as the poll stated, the question is how often do I toss out the litter and clean the entire box. The answer is (and please don't cringe out there) probably once a month at best. The reason is that I add scoopable litter as it depletes, which is probably twice a week or more. I never let the boxes have any less than three inches worth of litter in them at all times. I find that doing this makes the litter last longer and doesn't require a complete changeout as frequently. My friends tell me that my house doesn't smell at all like a catbox which I take as a compliment and testimony that my crazy strategy just might work!

I use the Crystal Step cat litter and you're only supposed to have to change once a month. But it usually gets changed ever 2-3 weeks.

I scoop every day, sometimes more then once, if I see something it gets scooped, total cleaning once a week, tho.

We use yesterdays news so there isnt much need to scoop really, even with two cats. So El Hub changes the litter every Sunday (since Im pregnant and cant do it myself) and we are good to go.

I scoop out every day and change the whole kit and kaboodle every 2 weeks. I agree with Jabbadoo , if you scoop out every day the litter is fine for a couple of weeks.

I change the litter every week.

I have 2 cats/2 litter boxes (and they are funny, they use one box to pee and one box to poop) I scoop every day, and swap out the litter every 2 weeks. For this household the key is scooping every day... and then the litter is fine for a couple of weeks.

I scoop at least twice a day and change the litter every Sunday. It does get expensive but I do not want my apartment to smell like litter!

i do my best to scoop the litter box daily but i'm not as good with changing the litter. i typically wait until the litter box smells like a litter box and then kitty gets fresh litter. i can't imagine changing the litter every week - that would get expensive!!! what is the correct answer - how often should the litter be changed?

I really should have choosen see below. I'm supposed to scoop everyday as we have a kitten who will poop on the floor for no reason whatsoever (even when I just scooped it and we put one in a secluded place to give her privacy). I knew I should have do it this morning before I left and you're just rubbing it in that I didn't do it.

I do once a week for my Kitten!

That depends. Since my kitty is allowed to run around outside, he sometimes barely uses his box at all. In winter I usually clean it once a week, in summer... well, there have been times when I didn't need to clean it for three weeks, because he simply didn't use it at all.
