Be Kind to Animals: Dealing With Neglect and Abuse

I hate even thinking about animals being mistreated, and definitely couldn't just stand by and watch it. The American Humane Association offers some tips on what to do if you witness abuse or neglect.

  • First off, you'll want to evaluate the situation. While seeing abuse is usually more clear-cut, try to take a step back when you think you've spotted neglect. It can start with witnessing dogs illegally tethered, but also things like ratty coats and visible ribs can be signs of a bigger problem.
  • Find out what to do next when you

    .

  • If you've witnessed animal mistreatment, it's always good to get another opinion from the proper authorities. Don't be afraid to report it to your local animal control department, police department, or humane society.
  • Be aware of what animal cruelty legislation exists in your area and know what definitions and penalties are in place. Make sure to also support any initiatives to strengthen your state's anti-cruelty laws.

Foxie I know of a wonderful non-profit animal rescue organization which is national but conentrates a lot of its efforts specifically in Georgia. They are large enough to have the capacity to make a difference but small enough to remain pure and genuine in their efforts. Animal mistreatment is the lowest of the low...glad so many of you feel the same! The organization I'm talking about is called Saving Shelter Pets & their website is http://www.savingshelterpets.com/ I know they are always looking for volunteers and they're also a great resource for anyone.

My neighbors have a chiuhua that they keep tethered outside all day. Should I call the city on them. It is a tough one because I don't want to have bad neighbor relations.

In my community it is a VERY common sight to see a dog tethered outside a retailer or a restaurant/coffee shop. In fact, many places will bring a bowl out to the dog and even give him a treat. I recently had to purchase a locking leash after a stranger threatened to steal our beloved pet because SHE did not agree with tethering. I believe it to be up to the owner to decide whether or not it's appropriate to tether a dog outside. Each pet owner knows their pet best. I live in a small one-bedroom apartment and my pup enjoys going outside with me. Fresh air, stimulation and attention from passers-by doesn't come CLOSE to being "neglect" in my opinion.

Its sad when aimals get abused. I witnessed abuse and I called aspca right away, I also called my local shelter and what they told me got me very upset. I told them everything I knew, even street that the dog lived on and they told me if I don't have an apartment number they can't do anything. It is sad =(

i agree foxie..i felt the same way about Texas. i know it may sound silly to some, but honestly i couldn't wait to get out of the state..i wouldn't want to raise a child in an area where people think so little of animals..those are not the values i want my child to grow up with..i volunteered at the houston SPCA (where they film houston animal cops) for 6 years..it was troubling to say the least.

Georgia has the worst animal protection laws in the country. I HATE it here... but once I get out of the military I totally want to land a job on an animal rescue task force. There would tons of work to do down here. Heck, just 2 months ago an Air Force Staff Sergeant in my command was arrested for cruelty to animals and (pending) dog fighting! AND she still has a job and hasn't been docked any rank! It's unbelievable.
